Tarot business marketing If you’re a professional Tarot reader, I’m betting that one of the biggest questions on your mind is, “How do I grow my Tarot business?” Today, I invite Kyana Mayfield of New World Tarot to share with you 87 ways to boost your Tarot career, from personal branding, marketing, community-building and more. Take it away, Kyana… Have you hit a plateau in your Tarot business? Feel like you’ve done everything right, but there’s still no great spike in your sales numbers? Stuck when it comes to thinking of methods on how to grow and attract more clients to your website? There are tons of ways to market your business online, and the strategies I’m about to share with you are timeless and should continue to be used well beyond the year of 2014. Don’t settle for mediocrity. Just imagine: you could finally make this the year to achieve ultimate success in your Tarot career.

Branding Strategies

1. Know why you do Tarot readings. It sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? But you’d be surprised how many Tarot readers have no idea what their purpose is behind doing what they do. My advice: don’t be one of them. Figure out your purpose. Ask yourself why you’re in the Tarot business. Is it to help other people understand themselves? Understand their relationships? Or is it just because you thought it would be an easy source of income? Or something your mother used to do, so you thought it’d be a fun hobby? These are only questions you can answer. Know your reasons and make sure they’re good ones. 2. Lay out your core principles. It’s a good idea to review your principles – especially for the New Year, when your business foundation may need to be tweaked based on what you’ve learned from previous clients or changes in the industry: What are your principles in reading Tarot? What are your policies? Do you operate under a certain set of “reading rules” that are doing more harm than good for your Tarot consultations? Create new ones that work for your current business model. Also look at your marketing strategy – review the basics of marketing your Tarot business, and change things up if it suits your needs. 3. Write a business tagline. Focus on creating something that reflects the image you want your business to have, and make sure that it aligns with your purpose (review tip #1). When creating your tagline, ask yourself the following, “What service do I offer my clients that cannot be found with any other Tarot reader?” 4. Establish your business culture. Do this only after you’ve completed tips #1, 2, and 6. This involves integrating your purpose with your business model and operation policies. Your culture will serve as a “screening filter” for every future business decision you make. This will become more and more important as your Tarot career grows and you have tons of opportunities knocking on your door every day. 5. Find your Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Find what makes you different from every other Tarot reader out there. Once you find it, make it into a tagline (review tip #3) and use it in your marketing materials. 6. Develop your long-term goals and plans as a Tarot reader. What do you ultimately want to do with your Tarot career? Where do you want it to take you and your family? What opportunities do you want it to provide? How much money do you want to make? What would you be willing to do to achieve your goals? Don’t worry about making your answers perfect – the point is to just get it down. Your goals will be the framework for how you choose to operate your business, how you develop marketing strategies, products and services, etc. In other words: it’s really important, so don’t skimp on this if you want to reach astronomical heights in your Tarot career. Think of it as a business plan – for yourself. 7. Know your vision. What difference do you want to make in the world with Tarot? What service do you think your Tarot readings will provide? Now’s the time to get innovative and let your creative juices flow. These aren’t easy questions to answer. But those who do answer come out to be the leaders and the ones with the most impact. Ask yourself, “What dent can I make in the Tarot universe?”

Income Boosting Strategies

8. Get your financial plan in order. This is kind of a big deal, and I think we’ve all been here before. I see many Tarot professionals (as well as many entrepreneurs in general) make this same mistake time and again: they build a business, get a few customers, earn a few hundred bucks, and in the midst of their excitement they spend all their earned income on a celebration dinner. And then they wonder why their business never grows or why there’s never any money left. Sound familiar? I bet it does. The solution? Invest in your business – in things that are going to give you more money, time, and long-term fulfillment. If you already earn a fixed amount per month, set a percentage for how much you will invest in your business – and make sure you follow through! 9. Launch a product. Whether an eBook, online course, system, or tool, showcase your Tarot expertise by creating something of value that customers can use again and again with or without your involvement. It’ll be like giving your customers a little “piece of your business” for them to carry around wherever they go. 10. Do affiliate marketing. Earn a commission for every sale you make on someone else’s products or services. This is a good long-term strategy, but it can take a long time to implement. If you insist on only doing free readings and plan on making most of your income from advertisements and affiliate links, be prepared to wait awhile before you make a significant amount. The same is true of the reverse – create an affiliate marketing program and pay commissions to other bloggers and business owners who sell your products and services. 11. Create a membership site. If you already offer free content, then you can choose to offer premium content to those who decide to join your site as paid members. The best thing about this strategy is the opportunity for recurring revenue – you can set a monthly fee for access to your private site or forum. The only catch here is that you must consistently provide high quality premium content on a regular basis in order to justify your clients paying for access. If you’re prepared for the challenge, go right ahead. 12. Publish a book. I’m talking about a physical book published by a professional book publishing company. The eBook thing has almost been vastly overdone in the virtual universe, so seeing that you have a physical book for sale could add a boost to your reputation as a Tarot expert overall as well as a bonus to your income. 13. Offer one-on-one coaching or a mentoring program. If you’ve been at this business thing for a while, turn around and share your success with other Tarot readers. Help them reach their full potential. Don’t go in blind though – if you have no experience with coaching, I’d suggest taking a few classes, reading a few books, or even getting professionally certified. Understanding human behavior and motivation is a must, as well. 14. Teach a class, course, or workshop. This is a form of coaching – but with a group versus one-on-one. Have classes and workshops for a variety of different topics: for example, have one class to teach the meanings of Major and Minor Arcana cards, a workshop to teach readers how to find clients, or even your own certification course: where you offer a series of classes to help Tarot readers become certified as professionals. 15. Utilize PPC and CPM advertising. Your results will mainly depend on how large your site is as well as the number of visitors you receive on a monthly basis. If you have a lot of traffic already, give this a shot. If not, wait until you do. 16. Sell direct banner advertising space. In order to attract high-quality advertisers to your site, you’ll need to have a large following and monthly traffic rate. 17. Ask for donations. If you offer a lot of free, valuable content on your site then visitors may want to give you something back for your generosity. Help them by putting a “donate” button on your website. (Note from Brigit: Make sure you know the rules before putting up a Donate button. I put up a PayPal Donate button to collect donations for a charity on the Biddy Tarot Free Tarot Readings page, but PayPal froze my entire account for 2 weeks because I did not have the official documentation or express permission to collect on behalf of a charity.)

Build an Unstoppable Sales Force

18. Design an awesome website. Whatever you do, don’t skimp on this. Put in the research hours or hire a professional to design it for you, but make sure you know what goes into a good site. This is going to be your #1 marketing tool, so leave a good first impression. My advice: purchase your own domain name and hosting, install WordPress.org, and then invest in a premium theme. It’ll all pay off big time. 19. Create online and offline marketing materials. Business cards, posters, website banners, flyers, postcards, magnets and t-shirts with your logo on them…get them all if you can. You can use services like Vistaprint or Cafepress, or hire a professional to create a custom design for you. 20. Start an email newsletter. Join Aweber or Mailchimp and start a newsletter to keep in touch with your audience. Try to have something new for them at least once per week, whether you’re sharing your blog updates, subscriber-only content, or weekly Tarot readings – make it consistent and keep them coming back to your site. 21. Create epic sh** on a regular basis. You may have heard otherwise, but you don’t necessarily need to write blog posts to produce epic content. You simply need to create something valuable – through any channel you wish to use. But you do need to learn how to produce good content; so knowing how to write will definitely come in handy. 22. Make videos online. This is becoming less of an option and more of a prerequisite for your Tarot business. Visitors want to see your face, hear your voice, and connect with you on a more intimate level. Plus it gives visitors the satisfaction of seeing your skills with the Tarot “in action”. You can learn more about video marketing here. If you’re shy like me, this is probably an issue, but it’s a fear that will have to be dealt with gradually for the sake of your business – so just practice by yourself with your digital camera, webcam, or phone. 23. Focus on building your email list. I could write an entire post on this one – I can’t stress its importance enough. If you’re not working on building your email list, then you’re not working on growing your business, period. Give people a strong enough reason to subscribe to your list, learn different opt-in techniques, and make this the center of your marketing strategy. 24. Optimize your “about me” page. Contrary to its name, you actually DO NOT want to make this page about you. You want to make it about your reader and what results your Tarot site will give them. What will they gain by visiting your site? Use this page to tell potential clients why your site exists, why you are qualified, feedback you’ve received from previous clients, and only give a short personal biography near the end of the page. Oh, and put a couple sign-up boxes in there somewhere.

Get to Know Your Customer

metalbar25. Create your Red Velvet Rope Policy. Take some time out of your day to create a profile of your “star client” by listing all of the traits you’d like your ideal client to have. What sort of questions would this client ask you? How would they respond to your Tarot readings? Would they leave comments on your site? Would they recommend your site to their friends? Where are you most likely to find this person? The more specific – the better. This policy will become tighter as your Tarot career grows, to the point where you refuse to work with anyone but those who match your ideal profile. 26. Join a Meet-up group or online forum where your customers hang out. If you need ideas for new content, find out what your customers want to know by going to them. You should know where they like to hang out if you already created your Red Velvet Rope Policy (review tip #25). Listen to what people say in these groups, and offer advice if you can. 27. Be helpful to people for free. People will always remember those who do favors for them. Set no conditions and don’t expect anything in return. Simply be helpful in any way you can and the return will set itself up. 28. Establish your own community. Set up a Facebook page, Meet-up group, Google+ Hangout, or an online forum where your readers can share their ideas, ask questions, and get help from your senior community members (readers who have followed you for a long time). 29. Survey your clients for feedback. You’ll want to create a list of questions or an online survey to send to customers after a reading. This will help create social proof for your services and also help refine your Tarot reading skills. Encourage customers to leave honest responses – and don’t ignore criticism (if it’s constructive)! 30. Always see your clients for who they are – not their circumstances. If you can see clients in light of their greatest potential, they’ll love you forever. Know why? Because you’ll make them feel special and valued and cherished. Be a witness to their character and potential for greatness, not the sizes of their wallet or friends list. If you can hold this image of greatness, you increase their chances of becoming great. And their greatness will come back to reward you ten times over. 31. Nurture your existing clients. A quote from the movie Vanilla Sky comes to mind, “The little things… there’s nothing bigger is there?” The same is true for your existing clientele. Continue to do little things for them: like remember their name, check how they’re doing every now and then, send them a gift or even a free reading for special occasions like their birthday or the holidays. Treat this like you would any relationship. Trust me; they’ll appreciate your effort.

Professional Development Strategies

32. You, Inc. Make it a priority to constantly work on improving your skills and take at least 20 minutes every day to meditate and connect with yourself. If you want to grow your business, you have to grow yourself – and that means treating your personal development and evolution as a business, too. 33. Find a mentor. Learning from someone with more experience and an impersonal point of view is probably one of the best decisions you can make for your Tarot career. Even if you can’t afford a personal mentor, try and do your own research by studying the professionals in your field from a distance and learn to “follow their lead”. 34. Take a course or attend a seminar. Don’t ever rest on your laurels. There’s always more to learn, especially when it comes to interpreting the cards in a new way or finding new marketing strategies for your business. 35. Join a professional Tarot Meet-up group, private forum, or association. This option has some of the same benefits of having a personal mentor, except that you’re learning from a wide variety of professionals who are all learning at their own pace. You’ll get a lot of ideas, but don’t take all of the advice too seriously. It’s all personal opinion, anyway. Pick and choose strategies that work best for you. 36. Interview experts in related fields. Sit and chat with a few experts in Tarot-related fields, like professional astrologers, psychics, channelers, etc. Chances are you could learn a thing or two from their business experiences – as well as collect some awesome content to share with your readers later on! 37. Know who you want to be and what you want to be known for. Do you have an idea for what you want your public reputation to be and what your business will be known for? What do you want people to think of when they say your business name? 38. Protect and manage your online reputation. Use tools such as Google Alerts and Naymz to monitor your online accounts and track what people are saying about you and your Tarot services on the Internet. If someone says something negative about you, offer to help them with whatever problems they may be having with your business.

Productivity Strategies

39. Create an editorial calendar. Backup your blog with at least 3 months’ worth of content and sprinkle it across your blog publishing schedule. This will take a massive load off your shoulders and give you a lot of extra time to be productive in other areas of your business. 40. Outsource minor tasks that take up too much time. Do you really have time to answer every email you get personally, schedule all those Skype appointments with every client, or check your social media account every 5 minutes? You might – but is it really productive or giving you the best results in your business? Probably not. Lighten your load: get the minor stuff out of the way and invest in either automation software or a personal manager to help you manage the little details of your business. 41. Create a schedule or “to-do” list. If you’re having trouble keeping track of what needs to be done, make an appointment with yourself once a week to review all the tasks you need to complete as well as the goal(s) you’d like to accomplish in the upcoming week, and create a schedule that outlines all the tasks you’ve chosen to finish in that week. 42. Prioritize your tasks. You’ll want to pair this together with tip #41: segment your tasks in order from highest to lowest priority, and always do the most important tasks first. If ALL your tasks are high-priority, then chances are you need to get your Tarot business goals straightened out and review tip #6. For a normal day, you should only have about 2 – 3 (not including readings) high-prioritytasks to complete every day. 43. Hire a virtual assistant. If your workload is getting out of control and you find yourself no longer being able to keep track of the little things, it’s best to eliminate the little things entirely from your list of things to do. And this is where virtual assistants come in – like gifts from the universe. (Note from Brigit: This was a game-changer for me. I hired my assistant, Kim, in March 2013 and my business has grown BIG time since then. Having Kim on-board has freed up my time to focus on doing what I do best – creating new material, connecting with my community and inspiring others to read Tarot with confidence. I highly recommend hiring help, even if it’s just for a few hours a week. You’ll see what a HUGE difference it makes. And no, you can’t have Kim!) 44. Allow guest bloggers and speakers on your site. You won’t have to come up with creative content on your own, and you’ll be giving your readers some diversity by allowing other guest bloggers and experts to share their stories and advice. 45. Host free and endorsed Tarot readers on your site. The effect of this is two-fold: number one – you help other Tarot readers establish themselves and build your reputation as a Tarot business coach, and number two – visitors will have the opportunity to either purchase or request a reading from someone else…which is extremely helpful if you have way too many orders in your backlog scheduled over more than a couple months.

Collaboration Strategies

46. Take on a business partner. Ideally, you’d choose to partner with someone who fills the gap in areas where you’re weak. For example: if you’re more of the mystical, creative type, your best bet is to partner up with someone who is practical and knows how to look after their resources. It’s all about balance here. 47. Get a store or other large company to host or sponsor your Tarot event. Good for local events, this spreads awareness of your business and can get you known as the “neighborhood Tarot reader”. 48. Pursue joint ventures. You receive all the benefits of having a business partner – with the added bonus of gaining access to another expert’s audience. 49. Consider cross-promotions with experts in related fields. You’re promoting each other’s business – what could possibly go wrong here? 50. Host a panel, radio show, or conference with other Tarot experts. This will immediately give you “expert status”. Plus you’ll make friends with other Tarot professionals you could end up joint venturing or doing cross-promotions with (review tips #48 and 49). 51. Crowdfund a project. This is a wonderful option for Tarot entrepreneurs who need capital fundraising. Good for really complex projects – so you probably won’t need to do this often. But it raises awareness of your business really fast with your customers and social network. Use Kickstarter or Indiegogo to get started. 52. Join a Tarot mastermind group. If you can’t afford a personal coach or mentor (review tip #33), this is probably the next best thing. Join a Facebook group or Google+ Hangout of around 4 – 6 people and make an agreement to hold each other accountable for projects you promise to complete each week in your business.

Psychological Tactics

53. Add personal development techniques and coaching strategies to your Tarot readings. If you want to make a big emotional impact on your client during a reading, you’ll need to understand certain principles of human behavior. Neurolinguistics is a great subject to learn if you really want to get inside your client’s mind. As a Tarot professional, it’s your responsibility to make sure you use these tools with great care of others’ emotions and not to abuse your authority. 54. Study business psychology. Research what motivates people to buy – and use the techniques in a responsible way. A great place to start on this topic is Social Triggers. 55. Read Influence. The title pretty much speaks for itself. All great marketers read this book. 56. Set clear boundaries. Make it clear just how much personal information you will accept from your clients, and how close of a relationship you are willing to have. If you do decide to have a very close, intimate relationship with your clients, the pros are the emotional connection – but if you’re not careful there’s also the potential of a client growing too dependent on you and your readings, and they might start abusing your services. To avoid this, review tip #25 and read this. 57. Learn how to manage others. If you’re going to be hiring anyone, or even outsourcing to other freelancers or companies, you’re going to want to learn how to manage people. Now this doesn’t mean you need to act like a control freak! Managing people well involves learning how to communicate effectively, share the goals and vision you have of your Tarot business with others, and delegate tasks to people based on their strengths. 58. Develop leadership skills. Get a copy of Leadership 101 by John Maxwell. Understand what makes a great leader and then focus on building your Tarot career around that. 59. Share ALL your secrets. It’s no longer sensible to be so concerned with idea theft. I mean, we live in the Aquarian age – information is free-flowing and limitless! And visitors of your site will not tolerate a tight-lipped Tarot blogger. You must come clean – otherwise you’ll lose them forever and they’ll just find their information someplace else.

Expand Your Reach

60. Book speaking gigs. Tarot conferences, spiritual universities, psychic stores and research organizations…there are loads of opportunities to expand your speaking career. If this is important to your long-term career goals, you’ll want to book yourself anywhere you can. 61. Connect with Tarot partners overseas. The Internet makes this option really easy to do. Ideally, you could partner with people who are bilingual, and offer to host them as endorsed Tarot readers on your site – so that there is always the option of offering your clients readings in languages other than English. 62. Hire a publicist. If you really want to become one of those famous Tarot readers who get interviewed on major TV shows and works with celebrities, then a professional publicist is a must for you. You’ll need to come out of pocket quite a bit, though. 63. Purchase advertisements on Tarot-related websites, new age magazines, and local newspapers. As long as you have a strategic plan in place for where you put the ad and why, this still remains an excellent choice to draw more clients to your business. 64. Do TV, radio, and YouTube interviews. Connect with other Tarot readers or intuitive experts on their podcast, radio or television show, or even their YouTube channel. This tactic could end up bringing loads of online traffic, depending on how well known the interviewer is. 65. Volunteer as a guest in another expert’s course. Depending on the size of the expert’s audience, this option could result in thousands of potential Tarot clients being referenced to your site every day – for as long as the course is made available. This immediately establishes your credibility and visitors will be more inclined to trust you. 66. Offer guest posts to popular blogs in Tarot-related fields. If you’re not already doing this one, what are you waiting for? Research popular blogs in astrology, numerology, life coaching, entrepreneurship, etc. and start submitting epic articles for them to publish.

Think Like a CEO

67. Hire an accountant. Once your Tarot career grows to a certain size, managing your financial accounts will probably become more difficult – which is why it’s the best time to start thinking about hiring a professional accountant. But that doesn’t mean you should skimp on learning the ropes yourself, at least the basics like creating a balance sheet and income statement. After all, accounting is the “language of business”. If you want to succeed financially, you’re going to have to understand the numbers. 68. Track and manage your cash flow. You can use your regular accounting program for this or online services like Mint (personal) or Outright (business). 69. Utilize A/B testing. If you want to know which headlines or call-to-action buttons work the best for your audience, then you’ll need to experiment until you get it right. 70. Create a system. If you want to leave a big mark in the Tarot community, create your own Tarot system for professionals or clients. Perhaps you could create software or some other automation tool that could add more value to your Tarot readings – then get others to use your system by spreading the word. This will involve a bit of creative thinking on your part. 71. Copyright or trademark your Tarot products, services, and brand names. Though I am far from being an advocate in protection against “idea theft”, I do believe certain precautions should be made when it comes to your products and systems, especially as your Tarot career starts to boom. To protect your assets, be extra cautious and make sure you legally own your own stuff – it’ll save you months or even years of court trouble later if someone decides to come out of the woodwork and claim your stuff as their own. 72. Keep track of your Google Analytics. Track your visitors, bounce and conversion rates. See what keywords and channels people use to find your website. 73. Leave a legacy in the Tarot community. In order to do this, you’re going to need a vision (review tip #7). What legacy can you leave in the Tarot universe? Who can you impact and how will it influence the future of how Tarot is practiced? What wisdom will you leave for future generations of Tarot readers? Examples of ancient and modern legends in the Tarot world include: Arthur Edward Waite, Pamela Wilson, Aleister Crowley, Mary K Greer, Joan Bunning, Rachel Pollack, Biddy Tarot, etc. Will you be next?

Social Media and Online Marketing Strategies

74. Choose 3 – 4 social media accounts. Unless you plan on providing consistent, valuable content on each account, then you don’t want to spread yourself too thin. Choose just 1 or no more than 4 social accounts that you’ll use to interact with your audience on a regular basis. 75. Schedule social outposts. Sign up for a free account on either Hootsuite or Buffer and schedule a few days or a whole week’s worth of social media content. You don’t want to spend too much time on social media – get this out of the way so you can have more time to focus on more productive business tasks and strategies. 76. Offer free advice and links to helpful sites on your social media accounts. If you’re really trying to help your audience, try not to post content that’s purely self-promotional. Offer free advice, Tarot card tips of the day, or even links to other articles and videos that have nothing to do with your site but you know will be helpful to your readers. 77. Develop your SEO strategy. Think of it as a long-term strategy – because that’s exactly what it is. There is no “magic formula” to beat the search engines at their own game, so just get that out of your head right now. When you’re first starting, don’t worry about being on the front page of Google. Simply focus on providing valuable content on your site, and your ranking will gradually improve on its own. Use keywords and meta descriptions that are relevant and accurate for your site, and don’t stress yourself over the rest. (As you grow, you can hire a company or person to take care of SEO for you.) 78. Hold contests and giveaways. Be social and active online and shake things up every now and then by hosting friendly contests and random giveaways with your readers. 79. Do webinars and teleseminars. If you’re promoting a new product or service, this is a good promotional strategy to initially get people to sign up. However, more and more people online are growing distrustful of webinars, as they usually end up getting a lot of promotion shoved in their face with absolutely no valuable content. Make sure you even out the scale by giving your readers a good enough reason to attend. 80. Launch an app. As the world becomes more mobile-friendly, you’ll want to continue to remain in the minds of your readers by giving them something to remember you by. You could hire a developer to create an app that sends out free “card of the day” tips or automated readings.

Ways to Give Back

81. Donate a percentage of your earned income to your favorite non-profit organization. If you want to grow your Tarot career and also work to further an important social cause or environmental concern, then decide on a fixed percentage of your income (between 5 – 10%) that you are willing to tithe every month to an organization you support. (Note from Brigit: I regularly donate to Kiva.org and support women across the world in starting up their own businesses. I highly recommend Kiva as a way of giving back.) 82. Offer free mini readings at orphanages or senior homes. Give everyone a chance to have fun with the Tarot, even those who cannot buy a formal reading from you. 83. Teach local intuitive development courses and workshops. What better way to promote spiritual awareness in your neighborhood or community than to teach people how to develop their intuitive abilities? Also consider offering Tarot classes for your fellow local readers. 84. Authors – donate copies of your published books. There are tons of non-profit organizations and book donation programs you can collaborate with. Also, be sure to promote yourself as a local author by sending copies and offering to give readings at your community library. 85. Connect with psychic research organizations. Speak with spiritual scientists, transpersonal psychologists, and parapsychologists and share your own personal stories or research methods on how you discovered your psychic abilities. 86. Join intuitive awareness campaigns. Offer to speak or partner with groups whose mission is to promote the awareness of our spiritual connection, such as the Center for Spiritual Living community or the Shift Network. 87. Have a bunch of free stuff on your site – a resources list. Offer your readers a list of free tools and resources you used to create your Tarot business, as well as a bunch of free articles and content that will help them get started with their own Tarot careers. The best way to grow is to turn around and give back.

10 Reasons Why Your Tarot Business Isn’t Thriving… Yet!

Blog-20140514-10ReasonsNotThriving

In the last 12 months, I have spoken with over 70 aspiring Tarot business owners about how to grow their businesses. Some are doing amazingly and are well on their way to building a business they love and that rewards them on many levels. But others are really struggling and having a hard time creating a business that is truly serving their inner and outer needs.

So it got me thinking. What is it that stops some Tarot businesses from thriving and fulfilling their greatest potential?

Here are my 10 reasons why your Tarot business isn’t thriving… yet! That’s right – if you can address these issues, you’ll be well on your way to creating your dream business that is filled with abundance.

1. You don’t know your WHY

Are you clear on WHY you do what you do? I mean it – why are you doing this? Why are you in business? Why do you want this?

If you go into business without knowing your ‘big why’, you’ll find those obstacles and challenges along the way so much more difficult to overcome. You’ll wonder why you’re staying up to 2am tweaking your website, or why you’ve just turned down a social invite so you can write a blog post that’s scheduled for tomorrow. You’ll also find it more difficult to receive, especially around money. And you’ll find it hard to know when to say ‘no’ – and when to say ‘yes’.

For me, my ‘big why’ has always been about inspiring my community to connect with the Tarot , honouring my unique talents of spirituality and business, and supporting my whole family in a way that we can travel and truly experience life together.

So what’s your ‘big why’?

2. You’re selling, selling, selling

So, you’re a Tarot reader. You create your website with your home page, your about page, and your services page. Done!

Uh, no.

Do you see the trouble with this picture? You’re just selling, selling, selling. “Buy a Tarot reading with me!” “Buy my eBook!” “Buy!!”

A visitor will come into your site, look around, decide they don’t want a Tarot reading, and will then leave. And you know what? There’s not really any reason to come back. So, “Buy-Bye” potential customer.

So what can you do instead? Give. That’s right – you need to give before you receive.

Perhaps you give away a free mini guide on how to attract love using the Tarot cards. Perhaps you share your unique Tarot card meanings. Or perhaps you write a compelling blog or newsletter about how your clients are working with the Tarot in unique and wonderful ways.

What can you give to your potential customers?

3. You’re trying to help ‘everyone’

A question I often ask Tarot business owners is, “Who do you serve?”

And the typical response? “Oh, anyone who wants a Tarot reading!”

I know we are all very capable people and we CAN serve many different people with our talents and skills. But the more you can define your ideal client, the better.

Think about it. If I’m nursing a broken heart, I could visit a Tarot reader who just does “3-Card Tarot Readings” or I could visit a Tarot reader who dedicates her whole practice to love readings and has the perfect spread for break-ups. Which one am I going to choose?

An engaging way to identify your ideal client is to think about your top 10 clients. What is common about them? Was it the question(s) they asked? Was it their demographics (e.g. young women)? Was it their core issues (e.g. self-esteem)? Or something else?

Start to build a picture of the type of client you serve the best. Then, create your offerings to serve that client.

Who do you want to serve and how?

4. You’re not charging what you’re worth

Oh boy. This is a BIG one!

If your business is struggling financially, or you’re not attracting the right type of client, then you have to ask yourself – am I charging what I’m worth?

Pricing your offers has to be one of the most challenging aspects of running a business. Why? Because it brings up so many of your insecurities and feelings around self-worth.

But if you want to run a thriving business, you have to charge what you are truly worth and honour the value you deliver to your clients.

Do your prices reflect your value?

5. You don’t have a loyal community

By our very nature, humans are ‘communal’ beings. We like to gather in groups, particularly with like-minded people. We like to feel like we ‘belong’ and we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

So, as a Tarot business owner, you have a huge opportunity to create your very own community and build personal relationships and networks of trust with those in your circle. This also has benefits for your business, as people are more likely to make a purchase with you when they know, like and trust you.

However, many struggling businesses don’t seem to understand the value of having a loyal community. Visitors come and go and there’s no way of bringing people into your space through community.

So here’s what you can do. Create a Facebook page for your business. Offer a weekly newsletter to stay connected. Hold free teleseminars or webinars to bring your community together. And remember, you have to give to receive, so consider what you can truly give to your community in the process.

How will you create a loyal community?

6. You’re scared of marketing

Marketing is for sleazebags, right?! Wrong!

For the soul-centred business owner, marketing is simply a way to share your gifts and talents with the world.

You want to help people, right? Well you need to get yourself out there and make it know that you’re here to help! That’s all that marketing is.

What’s more, if you’re going to run your own business, you need to be prepared to invest in building your marketing knowledge. I often say that running a successful Tarot business is 50% Tarot and 50% business and marketing.

How will you get your message out to the world? Here are 78 marketing ideas… and hey, here’s another 87 on top of that. No excuses!

7. You don’t know what you really want

Many struggling Tarot business owners are struggling because they don’t know what they really want! How much income do you want to make? How many clients do you want each month? How many new Facebook Likes do you need?

I know it myself. When I set an intention of what I really want, it happens. And when I don’t set that intention? Guess what – it doesn’t happen because it never had the energy around it to manifest.

Ask yourself – what do I really want from my business? What are your financial, spiritual and personal goals?

8. You’re trading time for money

It is so easy to get stuck in the trap of charging by the hour when you’re reading Tarot. “A 30 minute reading costs $X. A 60 minute reading costs $Y.” But if you’re pricing your readings like this, you’ve got it all wrong.

Think about the value that you offer your clients. Perhaps you help a client to map out a completely new career path that now serves their Higher good, thanks to your Tarot reading. How much is that worth? Or perhaps you help a client to reconnect with her son on a deeper level. Could you even put a price on the value of a significantly improved relationship?

Avoid the temptation to price your readings based on the time invested. Position your Tarot readings on the value (or the transformation) created and price them accordingly.

What’s more, when you think in terms of value not time, you’ll probably find new ways of working with your clients. For example, you may offer a 6 month transformation package with multiple readings and ‘homework’ in between.

What value do you add to your clients’ lives?

9. You’re treating your business as a hobby

I’ve seen it over and over – you say you’re running a business, but in actual fact you’re running a hobby.

What’s the difference? Well, people running a hobby don’t really care how much money they’re making (in fact, they may even be running at a loss), don’t have set working schedules, don’t invest in building their business know-how and don’t find ways to improve how they operate.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a hobby instead of business. Just make sure you are consciously choosing one or the other.

If you’re ready to run a business and not a hobby, then start treating your business like a real business. Get financial and legal advice. Set up clear processes to manage customers and profit. Brush up on your business skills. Be professional. Invest in your professional and personal development.

Choose now – are you a business or a hobby?

10. You’re waiting for someone else to give you permission to succeed

Sadly, I see this a lot. Instead of grabbing the bull by the horns and going for it, many struggling business owners are waiting for someone to give them permission to move forward and succeed. They want someone to tell them what to do or give them the nod of approval before taking the next step.

But running your own business isn’t like that.

In fact, you’ve got to be prepared to do nearly everything off your own bat. No-one is going to tell you what to do next. Sure, you might have a business coach or a supportive peer as a sounding board, but at the end of the day, it’s YOUR business and YOUR decisions that will power it forward.

So, what are you waiting for?

If you’re serious about building a thriving Tarot business, then get cracking. Make sure you know your ‘why’ and who you want to serve, you’re charging based on the value you deliver (not just the time you invest), you’re building a loyal community with high value content, and you’re investing in your business.

And if you’re super fired up, book a complimentary Discovery Session with me today. We’ll talk about your business vision and strategy, what’s getting in the way of you being successful, and assess the next steps in your journey.

Blog-20140702-ChangingAspiringReadersLives

Get ready to get INSPIRED! Today, I want to share with you the powerful stories of a handful of aspiring Tarot readers from the Biddy Tarot Network who have truly transformed their life (and others’) through Tarot.

I can’t tell you how much joy it brings me to hear these stories and to know that these people’s lives have changed simply by connecting with the Tarot and using the Tarot to connect with others.

I know in my own life, Tarot has opened so many doors I would never have thought possible. It gave me a creative outlet through my 20s as I studied at University and worked in corporate roles. It gave me something to focus on un my early 30s while I raised my baby girls (who are now almost 3 and 5!). And now, it gives me abundance on so many levels and enables me to work from home and support my family, whilst helping and inspiring many, many people across the world.

I feel so blessed to have Tarot in my life and I want to be able to share that joy with you by opening your mind up to the possibilities that are available to you.

And do you know what? You don’t have to be a 5th generation psychic, have a crystal ball, or wear crushed velvet to embrace Tarot in your life. The aspiring readers you are about to meet are ordinary people just like you and me. What they share is a love for Tarot and the courage to step into their fullest potential as Tarot readers, by reading on the Biddy Tarot Network. They have successfully taken this tool – the Tarot cards – and have used it to empower not only their own lives but others’ lives too… and the results have been magical!

Let’s meet these beautiful people…

Eva Leppard

“I’ve had a wonderful and fulfilling career in Education for nearly 20 years but I’d always felt that there was ‘something’ else waiting for me. Through an amazing set of synchronicities I was led to Tarot and now I know what I want to be when I grow up :).

“I’m currently building my own website, ready to launch my own business in September. I would have never thought that adding another item on my to-do list, which includes teaching and raising 4 small children, would have been fulfilling, but every time I send off a new reading I feel completely energised.” – Eva Leppard, Coriander Blue Tarot

Melodymelody_millward_btn Millward

“Reading for Biddy Tarot Network has given me the confidence to pursue tarot full time. I recently left my day job and my paid readings are beginning to come in more now that I have more time to focus on my career in tarot.” – Melody Millward, Northwest Tarot

Sandrasandra_denda_btn Denda

“Tarot had always been my secret passion. When I began providing free readings I realised that my education as a life coach and healer was going hand in hand by using tarot as a helping tool.

“There isn’t a better feeling in the world than being able to help others by the means of tarot. You can really hit it on the nail without knowing any previous information. This is what impresses the client and you have their immediate trust. I since opened my own website and have had quite a few successes.” – Sandra Denda

Dee Deedee_mozeleski Mozeleski

“When I was a teenager I practiced reading cards for friends and family but a few years ago I had a chance to meet a woman who was absolutely gifted with an understanding of cards. She suggested I learn to read for people other than my friends and close network.

“So I joined the Biddy Tarot Network. What a life changing experience that has been! I have had a chance to not only meet so many people, all with questions about their lives, but I’ve also had a chance to get to know me better by reading cards for others. I never imagined that I would have the confidence to read for anyone besides myself and my daughter – BTN changed that.” – Dee Dee Mozeleski, Bubbles Deux

Juliajulia_chalmers_btn Chalmers

“The BTN has enabled me to take action and start doing readings and not just thinking about it! Without starting on the BTN I am not sure if I would actually be brave enough to start to do readings. Now I am feeling it is possible for me to become Professional Tarot Reader.” – Julia Chalmers, Inspired by Astrology

Cassandracassandra_shea_btn Shea

“I was definitely terrified of reading for people online. I hadn’t done it much, in general, but I was worried about connecting with a querent through something intangible. I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick up on their energy enough.

“Now that I’ve started building experience reading for others, I feel comfortable charging for my readings outside of the BTN. I didn’t know I would get to that place as quickly as I did, but I really feel like offering free Biddy readings is what did it.” – Cassandra Shea, Inner Self Notes

Stephaniestephanie_mackay_btn MacKay

“The biggest way that Tarot has changed my life is by giving me much more confidence to express myself. When I first began doing readings I sometimes held back, unsure if I should say what I was thinking and I did this in other areas of my life as well. The practice that I have gained has allowed me to not only express myself clearly in readings but in all areas of my life. I now have the confidence and experience to do paid readings as my main source of income.” – Stephanie MacKay

Victoriavictoria_wilson_btn Wilson

“I was at a low point in my life – I had been fired from my job. I decided that was the opening that I needed to learn how to read the Tarot cards. Soon, I stumbled upon the BTN and I joined straight-away.

“Being a BTN free Tarot reader has opened my eyes to new possibilities that I would have never seriously considered only one year before. Reading Tarot has inspired me to take my career in a totally new and unexpected direction. Reading about Brigit’s story of leaving her corporate career to create a life in which she can work from home, be her own boss, and support her family while spending more quality time with them was very inspirational to me. Then I met other readers who were also building careers and small businesses doing what they love to do and helping people along the way. So I decided to create my own online business and Tarot blog, Eternal Athena Tarot.

“While Eternal Athena Tarot is a part-time gig for now and still has a long ways to go, I am so happy to wake up every morning knowing that I will spend the day inching closer towards something that is truly mine.” – Victoria Wilson, Eternal Athena

Scott Rattigan

“I’ve read the Tarot for over 20 years now, but it’s almost always been for family and friends, and, with only a couple of exceptions, never really been a skill I’d utilised outside of that circle. I wanted to create a deeper connection with my reading and my talents, to flex my Tarot muscles and see if I could put them to good use.

“Now that I’ve been doing readings for the BTN, I’ve had the opportunity to read for people from different backgrounds, countries and cultures, and I’ve been able to see just how much assistance and guidance it can provide to people who are complete strangers when their request comes in, but who are willing to open their lives to you for help and support.” – Scott Rattigan

Cyndee Saechao

“Before BTN I did readings for friends and family for kicks and giggles, it was mostly for fun. Now, I’m in awe at the accuracy of the cards and after having a really positive experience myself, I want to be able to offer my services to others and am now pursuing a professional career as a reader.” – Cyndee Saechao, Tarot by Cyndee

So, dear Tarot reader, be inspired to see how far you can take Tarot and how far Tarot can take you! The possibilities are endless and the journey is indeed whatever you make it. Enjoy the ride!

Working with Defensive and Resistant Clients in Tarot with Jenne Perlstein

Tarot Client Skills

Imagine a client Ann who comes to you saying that she keeps getting involved with the wrong men and asking when will she meet the ‘right’ one? She draws the Emperor and the 6 of cups as obstacles on her path. You reflect back that issues from her past and her relationship with her father, might be preventing her from having a fulfilling relationship. She quietens, and mumbles ‘the men are the obstacle: they don’t let me do what I want!’

Her relationship with her father was ‘fine’, but strict. ‘I was his only daughter’. You ask: were her boyfriends ‘fatherly’ towards her? Ann says ‘No’, crosses her arms and looks away guiltily, and says ‘my boyfriend was caring not fatherly, when he paid off my large credit card debt!’

As Tarot readers we have all seen clients like Ann, not owning their history or responsibility in relationship patterns and resisting your interpretations. What you are encountering is, as Sigmund Freud called them, ‘Defence mechanisms’! Defence Mechanism’s do not ‘explain’ behaviour but are unconscious distortions of reality, used to protect our ‘egos’ when there is conflict, stress or painful feelings/memories (http://faculty.atu.edu/swomack/3023ch2/sld006.htm 2014).

16234Ego

http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/16234/1/The-Ego-Defense-Mechanisms.html

They are OK in moderation e.g. when there is a crisis and you have to function for a short period but can become maladaptive if used all the time and unconsciously.

Ann has some conscious awareness about her problems e.g. the debt payment but seems to be unconsciously using denial, avoidance, rationalisation, projection and displacement because the reading is uncomfortable for her, and is highlighting her lack of responsibility. What are these Defence mechanisms?

Key Defence Mechanisms

Denial

Defence against external threat e.g. loneliness, illness; criticism; not picking up on another’s unhappiness; not taking responsibility for changing. Ann’s denies her difficult relationship with her father, projects her ‘father’ issues onto her boyfriends and avoids her own part in the relationship dynamic. (4 Pentacles, 4 Cups, 9 Cups)

Rationalisation

Assigning logical or socially desirable motives to what we do, so that we seem to have acted rationally or properly e.g. Ann’s boyfriend was being ‘caring’ not fatherly. (8 Swords, Knight of Swords)

Projection

Placing our own undesirable traits (shadow) in an exaggerated manner onto others e.g. Ann blaming her ex boyfriends – it’s all their fault; accepting their fatherly nurturance/rescuing of her with the debt payment, yet feeling frustrated and disliking their telling her what to do. Unconsciously, she may want to be rescued or fathered by her partners and is replaying out or projecting her difficult relationship with her father (Emperor, 6 cups) onto them. (4 Cups, Devil, 9 cups, Knight of Cups, Fool). Ann denies the connection between this and her current relationships.

Displacement

Displacing an unacceptable feeling towards a person or situation onto someone or something else: e.g. Ann’s anger towards her father is displaced onto her boyfriends. The ‘other’ is made bad ‘not me’. (Hilgard 1979 et al). (Devil)

Why is this happening?

Ann is likely to be reliving her unhappy relationship with her father via her boyfriends, but not wanting to confront uncomfortable feelings or take responsibility. Ann wants a quick fix! (Magician).

Here’s what you can try

If you have a similar client to Ann:

  • Empathy: Standing in Ann’s shoes. Don’t be critical or judgmental but acknowledge the difficult feelings. It is hard when you feel like this about relationships Ann, and that it’s the men who are the problem. This and the cards, help Ann to get in touch with emotional energy, not just logic.
  • Acceptance Show respect for Ann’s resistance/defences by accepting the way she feels. Ann – you really feel that men are the difficult ones.
  • Let uncomfortable feelings sit with Ann as this provides emotional compulsion to change. Don’t try to solve the client’s problems. Saying ‘we’- implies you have taken on the problem as your own.
  • Use silence which creates pressure for the client to fill the space.
  • Ask an open ended question, not ‘yes or no’ questions. How do you feel about your ex –boyfriend having paid off your debt?
  • Immediacy Tune in to what is going on here- right now! Talk about ‘the elephant in the room!’ Raise the issue up front about what is happening right now, by saying something about what the client is expressing, either verbally or via body language. E.g. Ann, you have gone quiet and seem uncomfortable. What’s happening for you?
  • Colombo technique: The client may see you as having all the answers, pushing against your interpretations, misunderstanding your role or not wanting to take responsibility. Take a position of naiveté-curiosity; be less knowledgeable and inexperienced, uncertain and puzzled (like Detective Colombo from the 70’s TV show). This way you provide less of a position against which to resist. Try ‘agreeing’ with Ann e.g. ‘Ann your ok with letting your ex being caring and paying off your debt but you don’t want to be told what to do? I am confused’. This will keep clients constantly having to explain things to you. Treat the client like an expert teaching you about their situation: the more the client is explaining, the more he/she is working and the less he/she is resisting!

All these techniques can help you with clients like Ann who are defensive and resistant. You and your clients will find consultations much more satisfying and less like a battlefield!

3 Simple Steps to Kick-Start Your Tarot Business

Blog-20140723-Kick-Startyourbusiness

Woo! You’re fired up and ready to start reading Tarot professionally. But where do you start? And when are you really ready to flip the ‘Open’ sign on your Tarot reading business?

If you’re about to start your Tarot business but you’re feeling like a deer in headlights, startled by what’s ahead of you, breathe a sigh of relief! Starting up your Tarot business doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. In fact, the sooner you can get started, the better because there’s a whole lotta potential right out in front of you, just waiting for you to say ‘yes’ to!

So get ready to take action as I share with you 3 simple steps to kick-start your Tarot business. Yes, you can be up and running in no time. Just get yourself out there and do it!

Step #1: Get Clear on What You’re Offering

Have at least 2 or 3 different Tarot readings that you can offer your clients.

The easiest way is to determine your Tarot reading offers is to organise your readings according to the time invested (e.g. a 30 minute Tarot reading and a 60 minute Tarot reading), the number of Tarot cards drawn (e.g. 4-7 cards or 8-12 cards) or the number of questions asked (although keep in mind, how will you define what constitutes just 1 question?).

Or you might want to have different readings for different topics or spreads such as a relationship reading or a career direction spread.

But why not take it a step further and consider what you’re really offering here.

What value do you offer your clients when they have a Tarot reading with you? What changes do you inspire? What kinds of transformation do you support? What’s truly different in your clients’ lives after they have invested time, energy and money with you?

Once you’re clear on what value you’re truly offering, then create your Tarot reading packages around those outcomes. For example, you might support your clients in connecting with their soul purpose so you create a “Connect with Your Soul Purpose Reading”. Or you might support clients through major life transitions so you create a “Smooth Transitions Reading”.

Step #2: Set Your Prices and Have a Way to Collect Payment

So you know what Tarot readings you’re offering to your clients. Now you need to set your prices and have a way to collect payment.

Pricing is a delicate balance of many different elements from the value you deliver to your clients, to your personal income goals and even to self-worth and self-confidence.

The best place to start is by choosing 3 or 4 different price points for each type of reading. Then, bring yourself into a deeply relaxed state, connecting with your Higher Self and your heart chakra. In your mind’s eye, call out each price and see how this resonates with your heart. Go with the price that feels the best. Then commit to it and believe in it. You’ll know after a month or two of charging that particular price whether it’s resonating or not, and you can easily make adjustments later down the track. Don’t let it be something that gets in the way of you starting.

You’ll also need to make sure you’re ready to collect payment.

If you’re starting your Tarot business online, then the easiest way is to sign up for a PayPal account. That way, your clients can pay you via credit card or PayPal with a single click.

If you’re running a local Tarot business, then you can accept payment at the time of the reading but better yet, I recommend pre-payment at the time of booking (again, use PayPal).

Step #3: Find Your Platform

Awesome – you know what you’re offering and you’re ready to collect payment for your services. You’re one step away from being open for business!

Now you’ve got to find your platform. That is, how are you going to reach your potential clients and make a real difference in the world?

If you’re starting your Tarot business online, there are a number of options available. I strongly believe the best place to set up your online Tarot business is with your own website, on your own domain. It’s easily done – get yourself a website host (e.g. GoDaddy or Bluehost), a domain (usually through your host), install WordPress (again, you can usually do this with one click through your host), choose a theme (there are many free ones on WordPress) and voila, you’re done!

Avoid third party websites such as WordPress.com or Blogger. Why? Because you’re on their terms and not your own. And what if they decided tomorrow to shut up shop or ban Tarot readers from using their services (just like eBay did)? Eeks.

You could also create a Page on Facebook so you can quickly start offering Tarot readings. But again, Facebook is a third party provider so you lose control over your business. Best to treat this as a short-term strategy while you get your website up and running.

Etsy is another option especially as you can start offering your readings directly on your page. However, there are so many people selling Tarot readings at low prices that it’s likely you’ll find charging higher prices a lot more challenging.

If you’re starting your Tarot business locally, you can set up shop at your home (be mindful of your personal security and privacy), by offering a home visit service (again, be mindful of your safety and travel time), at a new age shop (and pay a commission or rent to the owner) or in a local café, bar or hairdresser (with permission from the owner, of course!!).

And You’re Open!

Open-for-business
As soon as you have your Tarot reading offers, prices and platform, you’re ready to go. Flip that sign over and you’re open for business!

Of course, you’ll then want to focus on extending your reach and connecting with as many potential clients as possible. Start with my 78 strategies to market your Tarot business right here.

5 Signs It’s Time to Raise Your Tarot Reading Prices

Blog-20140910-RaisePrices

Pricing. This topic alone brings up so much anxiety, self-doubt and worry amongst professional Tarot readers. It forces readers to think deeply about self-worth and confidence as readers and business owners. In fact, many Tarot readers avoid thinking about pricing all together, keeping their Tarot reading prices stay at the same level, year in and year out – often doing themselves a disservice by charging too little and earning only a fraction of what their services are truly worth.

Yet, if you are to have a successful Tarot business, it is critical to set your Tarot reading prices at the right level.

So in today’s post, I want to share with you the 5 signs it’s time to raise your Tarot reading prices.

But before I do, I want to address the BIG fear that many Tarot readers have when raising their rates – will I lose clients?!

Well, I am going to put out something outrageous here – what if you were to actually gain more clients by raising your fees?!

Yes, it’s true. Oftentimes, higher rates attract more clients, particularly if you were under-charging to start with. It’s all about perceived (and actual) value. Let me explain.

Let’s say you wanted to get a massage as a special gift for yourself. At Shop A, a one hour massage is just $40. At Shop B, it’s $100. Sure, you could save yourself $60 at Shop A, but would it be the type of indulgent and luxurious experience you really wanted? Would you be confident that your masseuse was adequately trained and talented to give you a deeply relaxing massage? I know what I would much rather do – pay that little extra and get peace of mind.

That’s what perceived value is all about – higher rates (within reason, of course) often suggest higher quality and therefore impact the perceived value of your Tarot reading services.

(Of course, as professional and ethical Tarot readers, we need to make sure that we actually match that perceived value with actual value, by investing ourselves fully in our Tarot readings and giving the best experience we possibly can.)

So, how do you know when it is time to raise your Tarot reading rates? Here are 5 signs to look out for.

1. You want to give more, but you’re feeling tired and drained

This was me in 2013. I LOVED giving in-depth Tarot readings, with 10+ card readings, detailed explanations of the cards, beautiful woven stories and additional information such as Personal Year numbers and Birth Cards.

But I got tired, ever so tired.

Each of these readings took over an hour to complete, and yet I was still charging a rate that was reflective of a half hour time investment rather than a full hour. At times, I even felt resentful when a new Tarot reading request came through – not a good place to be!!

I knew I had to make a decision, fast. I could give less in my readings – but always with the feeling that I could have given more. Or I could continue to give my absolute best, but at a higher rate to reflect the value of the insight I was sharing and to honour the time and energy I invested in each reading. I chose the latter.

So, if you’re in a position where you are giving your absolute ‘everything’ to your Tarot readings and you want to keep it that way without feeling tired, drained or resentful, then consider raising your rates. Think deeply about the time and energy you invest as well as the value you share with your clients, and set your Tarot reading prices accordingly. Choose a price that makes you feel exuberated to go ‘above and beyond’ for your clients. You’ll feel WAY better about it and your clients will appreciate the ongoing value of your Tarot readings.

2. You’re falling short of your money goals

Sweet pea, you’re running a business here – remember that! If you’re not hitting your money goals right now, something needs to change.

Sure, you could revisit your goals and adjust them to something more ‘realistic’. But rather than simply ‘settling’ on an income goal that may be a lot lower than what you really wanted (or can sustain), why not experiment with raising your fees and increasing the flow of money coming into your business.

Remember, increasing your rates may indeed increase the number of clients who choose to work with you because the perceived value also increases. And more clients at higher rates means you’re much more likely to hit (or exceed!) your business goals.

3. You’ve got more Tarot reading bookings than you can comfortably handle

It’s a great problem to have – clients lining up to have a Tarot reading with you. But what happens when you’re getting 10 or more bookings in a day, or you’re having to read 10 hours non-stop every day just to keep up? I don’t know about you, but I can only take a few readings a day otherwise I completely burn out.

If you find yourself in the position where you have a long waiting list, you’re working long hours or you’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of Tarot reading bookings that you have, then it’s probably time to increase your prices.

And as your Tarot business grows, you may find that you want to free up your time to work on new projects, such as Tarot classes or online programs. By raising your rates, you can curb your demand for readings whilst still generating a similar income and giving yourself some extra hours in the day for other projects.

4. You haven’t raised your prices for a couple of years

If you haven’t increased your Tarot reading prices in the last 2 years, what have you been doing?!
Drama aside, it’s good practice to at least review your pricing every 1-2 years (in fact, I review my pricing every 3-6 months).

Check in with yourself – do my prices still accurately reflect the value I deliver to my clients?

It’s likely that your Tarot reading style has evolved and improved and, in turn, the value of your readings have increased. You’ve probably also advanced your Tarot reading skills with Tarot classes and programs. So make sure that your Tarot reading prices accurately reflect where you are right now, rather than where you were when you last raised your rates.

5. Your cards are telling you so

OK, we wouldn’t be Tarot readers if we didn’t consult our Tarot cards every now and then for ourselves, would we?!

If you’re feeling even just the slightest pull towards reviewing your Tarot reading prices, why not draw a few Tarot cards to see what they have to say.

If your prices are just about right, then you might expect to see cards such as the Four, Six, Nine or Ten of Pentacles, the Nine of Cups or the Justice card (think balance!).

But if your Tarot reading prices need your attention, then expect to see those cards in the reversed position – i.e. something is out of balance or the energy there is not flowing the way it ought to. You might also expect to see Tarot cards like the Five of Pentacles, Seven or Nine of Wands, or the Tower.

And, as always, listen in to your heart and your intuition. Put aside any fear or doubt about raising your rates, and instead ask yourself, “What would it feel like to charge more for my Tarot reading services?”

Exciting? Exhilarating? A little scary (but ‘good’ scary)?

Excellent!

If underneath all of the doubts and fears is a calm and centred certainty, then you’re on the right track. In fact, that intuitive feeling might just be the most powerful sign that it is indeed time to raise your Tarot reading prices!

Are You Working Within Your ‘Zone of Genius’?

Blog-20141105-Zone-of-Genius
Can you remember a time when you were so engaged in your work, it didn’t even feel like work? Time just slipped away and hours felt like only minutes, as you were completely and utterly ‘in the zone’?
Perhaps you feel like this when you’re reading the Tarot cards or developing new Tarot reading techniques? Or perhaps you find yourself ‘in the zone’ when you’re teaching others how to read Tarot and inspiring beginners to transform their life with the Tarot cards?

It’s an amazing feeling, isn’t it?

You know you’re doing your best work and serving others at the highest level because you’re bringing your passions and your talents together in a magical (and highly productive) partnership.

The zone I’m talking about is called the “Zone of Genius” – a phrase coined by The Big Leap author, Gay Hendricks. (I highly recommend his book – it was a game changer for me.)

When we work within our Zone of Genius, we create magic!

Discovering Your Zone of Genius

So how do you find your Zone of Genius?

The thing to remember here is that everyone is different. For me, my Zone of Genius might be teaching groups how to read Tarot online or growing a thriving Tarot business. But for another Tarot reader, it might be working one-on-one with clients in a Tarot therapy session or reading Tarot at parties.

Your Zone of Genius is unique and individual to you. It is what makes you special.

To discover your Zone of Genius, ask yourself the following questions (adapted from The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks):

  • List the last 3 things you did (or experiences you had) that brought you deep joy. What do these 3 things have in common?
  • What do I most love doing? That is, I love it so much that I can do it for long stretches of time without getting tired or bored.
  • What work do I do that doesn’t seem like work?
  • In my work, what produces the highest ratio of abundance and satisfaction to amount of time spent? That is, what work do I love doing that delivers huge value?
  • What are the special skills and talents that I’m gifted with?

You might also like to draw a Tarot card or two for each of the above questions to help add further insight.

Once you become consciously aware of what is within your Zone of Genius, you can start to create more opportunities to operate from this magical place.

What’s Not in Your Zone of Genius

It’s just as important to know what is not in your Zone of Genius.

Gay Hendricks talks about a further three zones which we operate from:

  • Zone of Excellence – activities you do very well but don’t necessarily get a lot of joy from (e.g. completing 10 1-hour Tarot readings in one day)
  • Zone of Competence – activities you can complete successfully but it’s not something you’re excellent at (e.g. uploading blog posts to WordPress)
  • Zone of Incompetence – activities you dislike and that take a lot of time (and frustration) to complete (e.g. website coding)

Do you find yourself working from these zones? In fact, I’m going to bet you that you probably spend 80-90% of your time outside of your Zone of Genius, particularly if you’re feeling stressed, tired or run-down.

Take the test. Keep a diary for the next week and write down how much time you’re spending in each zone (and what you’re doing). You might be surprised at how much time you spend on activities that deliver neither value or joy.

How to Work More Within Your Zone of Genius

OK, so clearly we want to work more in our Zone of Genius.

One of the best ways to operate from your Zone of Genius is to make time for it. Easy, right? Prioritise and schedule your time around your Zone of Genius activities.

For example, if you’re a morning person, dedicate a couple of hours when you first get up to focusing on what’s in your Zone of Genius. Don’t open your Inbox or sign in to Facebook. Get moving on where you know you do your best work.

And of course, to work more within your Zone of Genius, you’ll want to work less in those areas that are not in your Zone of Genius (i.e. the Zone of Excellence, Competence and Incompetence).

Here’s how…

Give yourself permission to say ‘no’ to new opportunities that are not within your Zone of Genius. Sure, you might have a client who would love for you to read Tarot about a loved one who has passed, but perhaps mediumship is not in your Zone of Genius, so you politely decline.

Delegate or outsource activities that are in your Zone of Competence and Incompetence. For example, if website development and coding drives you nuts and you’d prefer to be reading Tarot, hire a web developer.

Automate. For example, instead of sending emails back and forth with your Tarot reading clients to set up a Skype call across different time zones, send them to an appointment scheduling service such as Time Trade (I use this for booking coaching calls and love it). It’ll save you a lot of time and a lot of headaches.

Limit your time doing activities that outside of your Zone of Genius. OK, so yes, as an online Tarot business owner, it’s important I spend time in my communities on social media but do I really need to spend hours in Facebook? Probably not.So instead, I limit myself to 15 minutes at set times of the day. Job done – move on!

So, dear Tarot reader, what is in your Zone of Genius? What steps are you taking to create more time for working in your Zone of Genius? I’d love to hear your insights so share your comments below.

How to Connect with Your Ideal Tarot Reading Client

Blog-20141217-Connect-with-ideal-Tarot-Client

So you’re a Tarot reader and you’d love to read Tarot for everyone, right?

That’s great… but I have one question for you.

How are you going to reach “everyone”?

It takes time, it takes money and it takes energy to find just one Tarot reading client, let alone “everyone”!

And, more importantly, do you really want to read Tarot for everyone? I mean, do you really want to read Tarot for that lady who says she’s interested in a reading but doesn’t actually believe in all that “airy fairy mumbo jumbo”? Or that young guy who just wants to know if he’s going to “hook up” over the weekend?

I didn’t think so.

That’s why knowing your ideal Tarot reading client is so important.

It saves you time, money and energy finding clients. And it ensures that you are working with the right client, not just any client, doing your absolute best work within your Zone of Genius.

So how do you figure out who your ideal client really is?

Here are 3 ways to connect with your ideal Tarot reading client.

1. Have a Conversation with Your Favourite Clients

Pick 3 clients that you have absolutely LOVED working with. Perhaps they are super loyal clients who have been seeking Tarot readings with you for years. Or perhaps they are clients who totally energise you when you’re working with them. Maybe they are your highest value clients.

Select those 3 dream clients right now. Now, write down why you picked them. What makes them so amazing to work with? What do you know about their demographics (e.g. age, gender, occupation, country, etc.)? And what you do know about their values, beliefs and mindsets? Are there some common themes across these 3 super star clients?

Now for the challenging bit! Set up a time to have a 15-30 minute conversation with each of these 3 clients. It might be over a coffee or vino, on Skype or on the phone. The whole idea of this conversation is to get to know your ideal client. What are their hopes and dreams? What are their biggest challenges? Why did they choose to work with you and not someone else? How can you continue to support them?

Make sure you take lots and lots of notes (or better yet, ask permission to record the conversation). You’ll start to build up a very rich profile of your ideal client this way. And I bet your 3 dream clients will love you even more for going out of your way to find out more about the.

2. Run a Survey with Your ‘Tribe’

If you have a larger ‘tribe’ and you want to understand the common themes amongst this group quickly and easily, then a survey can be a great way to do it.

Create a survey using Google docs and ask your community a series of questions about themselves – similar to what you might ask if you were having a 1:1 conversation, but with some more quantitative responses. It’s also a good idea to ask a few general, free text questions like “In what kinds of situations do you turn to the Tarot cards for insight?” or “If we were on the phone together, what would the be number 1 question you would ask me?”

If you already have some idea of your ideal client types, you can ask your tribe to self-select which type they most identify with. Give a short description of each and see what proportion of your community fit into each type. Then, segment their answers to the other questions by client type so you can build up even more information about what makes each group different.

3. Connect Energetically with Your Ideal Client

OK this last one is very powerful and works incredibly well for Tarot readers in particular, thanks to our honed intuition!

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Take a moment to notice how relaxed and at peace you feel. Now, imagine a time when you were working in your zone of genius with a client. Perhaps you were doing a Tarot reading or teaching Tarot or something completely different.

Take note of what makes this situation really special and unique. What are you creating with the client? What’s happening here? What energy do you feel?

What do you know about them? Who are they? How old are they? What do they do for work? Are they wealthy or do they just have enough to get by? What else do you know about them?

Now think about the specific person you’re working with. Look into their eyes and feel your heart connect deeply with their heart. Connect with their energy and their inner essence. What do they believe about the world? What’s important to them? What are their goals and aspirations? What do they struggle with? What do they fear? Why have they come to you? How can you best help and support them? What makes them different to other people you’ve worked with?

Beautiful. Now give thanks to this person for sharing their energy with you. Then open your eyes.

Write down everything you learned about your ideal client during the visualization. What new information came to you?

You Know Your Ideal Client – Now What?

So you’ve connected with your ideal client and you’re starting to get a lot clearer about who it is you want to work with. Now what?

Well, it’s time to integrate that new knowledge into your website, your marketing materials, your blog posts, your newsletter, your social media updates and so on. Speak to the heart of your ideal client through your various platforms and engage with them on an authentic level.

Go where your ideal client hangs out and be useful.

And make strategic choices about where you spend your time and who you choose to connect with.

At the end of the day, if you try to reach ‘everyone’, you’ll end up engaging with no-one. But if you reach out to the people who value your services and with whom you do your best work, you’ll create magic.

Keeping it SpirituREAL – How to Stay Spiritually Grounded as a Tarotpreneur

Blog-20150218-Keeping-It-Spiritureal-as-a-Tarotprenuer

At the start of this year, I was feeling frustrated, irritable and off-balance at the end of every work day. This wasn’t like me – something was up.

When I took the time to step back from my business, I realized something important.

I had temporarily lost connection with the soul of my business.

Instead of connecting with Spirit and being guided by my Higher Purpose, I found myself spending hours and hours in the minute details of my business, messing about with email provider settings (I’ve just moved to Ontraport and let me say, it’s been a steep learning curve!), worrying about the latest marketing strategies and getting caught up with big hairy audacious goals focused on numbers rather than something much deeper.

Sure – I have been a full-time Tarotpreneur long enough to know that not every day is filled with rainbows and unicorns and sometimes you just have to put in the hard yards to bring your dreams into full manifestation.

But this was something different.

I needed to get spirituREAL.

So I asked myself, “How can I make every work day beautiful, soulful, and in flow where I am doing my best work, fulfilling my higher purpose, being of service to the Universe and my community, and creating abundance?” (Not much to ask, is it?!)”

Once I put these practices into place, I found that nearly every day felt joyful, in flow and aligned. I can’t tell you what a wonderful feeling that is – to know that I am living in resonance with my spiritual path, in everything that I do.

My intention with sharing my personal practices with you is that you, too, can create full alignment in your business and keep it spirituREAL.

1. Draw a Weekly Oracle Card

Each week, I drew a ‘theme’ card to understand what it is I need to focus on to remain spiritually grounded in my business. Right now, I’m using the gorgeous Kuan Yin Oracle Deck by Alana Fairchild.

This 44-card deck is filled with “blessings, guidance and enlightenment from the divine feminine”. Not only does each card come with a deep and meaningful

Not only does each card come with a deep and meaningful interpretation, it also comes with a guided visualisation that you can use to tap into the energy of the card (more on that shortly).

Kuan yin oracle

For this week, I drew the Orchid Priestess of Destiny with the message that everything is just as it is meant to be, as the Universe wishes it to be. Everything is falling into place and coming together in the most beautiful way. Thank-you Universe!

Every day, I focus on this message, feeling grounded and connected with my Higher Purpose.

Keep it SpirituREAL: Choose a Tarot or Oracle deck and draw a theme card for the week.

2. Meditate Daily

Each morning, before I start work, I close my eyes and I begin to visualize white, Universal light flowing through me. I ground myself through my feet on the floor, into the earth. And then I follow the guided visualization from the Kuan Yin card I have drawn for the week.

With the Orchid Priestess of Destiny, I have been visualizing myself in the middle of a spiral of energy and personal events, with the spiral continuing below and above me. The spiral below represents from where I have come – all the events and experiences that make me who I am right now. And the spiral above represents where I am heading – my evolution. Beside me is the energy of Kuan Yin herself, gently guiding me to the next step along my spiritual path.

This meditation reminds me why I’m here and how I can serve my higher purpose through Biddy Tarot.

In addition, every few days, I’ll do a longer guided visualisation from Radiance by Alana Fairchild or Experience Your Intuition. And if my energy is low or I’m feeling illness in any way, I’ll do a Chakra Balancing with Deepak Chopra.

These guided visualizations are so important in raising my vibration and connecting me with Source.

Keep it SpirituREAL: Make the time for your favourite guided visualisations and connect with your Source energy.

3. Draw 2 Cards for the Day

After my morning meditation, I draw two Tarot cards for the day ahead of me, asking two questions:

  1. How can I be of service to my community?
  2. How can I create abundance today?

Right now, I’m connecting with the Gaian Tarot. For example, today I drew the Explorer of Air reversed and the Teacher, respectively.

Gaian Tarot

The Explorer of Air reminds me that I am here to communicate and share new insights with the Biddy Tarot community, while the reversal of this card reflects that today, it is communicating privately and personally. And here I sit, on a sunny window bench at my local café, writing to you about my personal spiritual practices, in the hope you’ll find a golden nugget that you, too, can apply to your practice.

The Teacher has been appearing a lot lately! How very fitting as I am coming up to the start of the LIVE TF1: Master the Tarot Card Meanings program. I am preparing for my role as teacher and how I can offer abundant gifts to my TF1 community. (I’m writing this post on Feb 5, and TF1 started on Feb 9.)

Each day, I take note of the cards and find ways to connect with and manifest their energies in my work. Powerful stuff!

Keep it SpirituREAL: Start your day with 1-2 meaningful questions and draw a Tarot card for each one. Let the energy of these cards permeate your day.

4. Reframe My Goals

As a high achiever, I am incredibly goal-oriented. That goal-orientation is mostly positive – it has helped me create a successful corporate career and now a successful Tarot business. But every now and then, goal-orientation has lead me off-track and feeling empty.

Consider the difference in energy around these two goals:

  • Goal A: Enrol 200 people into the TF1 program.
  • Goal B: Openly receive all those who are ready and willing to master the Tarot card meanings in my TF1 program.

When I focused on Goal A, I was highly motivated when setting the goal but then I became anxious as I watched the numbers every day and every hour throughout the TF1 launch. It didn’t feel great – who wants to feel anxious?! And what impact does my anxiety have on people considering the program?

When I decided to shift my focus to Goal B, my energy shifted. I no longer focused on what I didn’t have – “I need 50 more students to enrol!!” I focused on what I did have – “Wow, 150 aspiring Tarot readers have found their way into TF1 and are ready to master the Tarot card meanings. I can truly help these people!”

Keep it SpirituREAL: If your business goals are leaving you feeling anxious or drained, reframe them to something more soulful and abundant. Create goals that reflect gratitude for everything that comes to you.

5. Set Intentions with the Moon Cycles

One of my best friends, Eve, is BIG on moon cycles. Even with 3 kids and 1 on the way, she always finds time to honour the full moon and the new moon with an intention-setting ritual.

I guess it has rubbed off on me! While I don’t do a full ritual, I do spend some time reflecting on my intentions for the moon cycle ahead, in line with the astrological association for that new or full moon.

moon cycles

At every new moon, I write my intention on a piece of paper and store it away in my ‘manifestation box’ on my desk. At the full moon, I release that intention into the Universe, allowing it to flow gently until the next new moon and the next intention.

My intentions are blend of both business and personal, reflecting the true integration I seek out between the two.

Keep it SpirituREAL: Work with the moon cycles to set your business and personal intentions. (Mystic Mamma is an excellent resource for understanding the energy of each new and full moon.)

5 Tips to Pretty Up Your Tarot Blog with Beth Maiden

Blog-20150304-5-Tips-To-Pretty-Up-Your-Tarot-Blog-with-Beth-MaidenNote from Brigit: I am so excited to welcome Beth Maiden to the Biddy Tarot blog this week. Beth is not only a talented Tarot reader & blogger at LittleRedTarot.com but also a gifted web designer (and feminist!). I invited Beth to share her top strategies for creating a beautiful Tarot blog. Take it away, Beth…

If you write a tarot blog (or indeed any kind of blog!) you probably know how important it is to make it look and feel good so that readers will enjoy visiting, will spend time reading what you have to share, and will come back again and again.

As a tarot bigger who is also a web designer, I get plenty of lovely feedback about my website, littleredtarot.com. I put a lot of love and energy into designing and building my site, and regularly tweak and tinker with the code in a continuing effort to improve my blog.

But you don’t need to know code or even host your own blog in order to create an attractive website. There are plenty of things you can do, from choosing clean, attractive templates in the first place to breaking up your content and taking better photos, all of which will help to engage visitors in your site.

1

Most bloggers (especially those who are passionate about their blogs) think of their websites as their online ‘home’- a space where visitors are welcomed and made to feel comfortable. We as much care and attention into the design of our sites as into writing our blog posts, ensuring that when guests arrive, the atmosphere is just right.

Here are five simple tips you can put into action today to help make your blog a more attractive and welcoming place to be.

Choose a nice colour scheme

This sounds obvious, but I’m often surprised (and put off) by the colour choices on some blogs. Of course some websites are meant to be explosions of colour and that’s awesome…but it’s hard to get this right. Easier than this is to put together a palette of colours you like (which don’t make your eyes hurt,) and use these consistently throughout your site.

Here’s a helpful post about creating a style guide for your blog by Sarah Morgan on XOSarah.com

If your theme or template doesn’t allow you to choose your own colour scheme, then consider switching to one that uses colours you really love.

Use plenty of good-quality pictures

Using images helps to break up your post which makes it easier for people to read…and keep reading.

Here are a few basic guidelines for using images on your site:

Quality matters! Your photos provide a visual indication of the overall quality of your blog and the amount of care you take over it. Low-quality pictures will put your readers off. If your phone camera isn’t very good, consider buying or borrowing a digital camera which produces decent-quality, non-blurry pictures.

Natural lighting. If you take a lot of photos of tarot cards or spreads, for example, find a table or sideboard near a window and use this for these shots – it will make a big difference to the quality and feel of your photos.
2
Make the best of your subject. If your post is about an actual tarot spread, consider photographing the spread directly from above, or, if it’s about a single card, you could play around with different ways of displaying that card, or use props (for example, in a post about the Page of Swords, I could emphasize the ‘communication’ element of this card by photographing it on a notebook.)

Use landscape photos where possible so as not to fill up the entire screen. If you do want to share tall images (which of course tarot cards usually are!), try taking a landscape photograph on a pretty cloth or table, or put two card images side-by-side to create a landscape image.

3

I do a lot of photography which means I’m never short of pics for my site. It’s worth getting into habit of taking photos of things you find beautiful or meaningful, so you can build up a cool image bank to pretty up your posts.

You could also try: 30 free stock photo resources for bloggers.

Use headings and sub-headings

4

Again, be aware that people’s online attention spans are embarrassingly short. Think of this as a whole different type of reading style –more like magazine-reading than books.

Often, people want to skim over your post (the way you flick through a magazine), clocking the headings to check your post is relevant before they dive in properly. As well as adding pictures, you can break up your paragraphs with headings to help readers see quickly that your post is something they want to read!

A typical post layout will have the title in Heading 1 – this will normally be determined in the site’s code. You can then try an opening line in Heading 2 (h2) and sub-headings throughout the post in h3.

5

Clear out your sidebar

When you start a blog, it can be tempting to put every widget going into your sidebar. Faces of all your Facebook friends, a long list of blogs you enjoy, comment counts, visitor numbers, subscribe links, monthly archives and more. But how much of it is actually serving a purpose?

Pruning your sidebar is a good way to get rid of unhelpful distractions and show your readers what you really want to share with them. It needs to be important if it’s going to pull their eyes away from your actual post!

Ask yourself what is the purpose of every widget, link, image or *thing* in your sidebar. Is it helpful to your readers? Does it direct them somewhere important? Or is it just there because you thought it was cool, or by default? Have a think about whether there are things you could remove from your sidebar.

Last but not least…white space

I bet the websites you most love to visit, the ones which feel like good places to hang out, and the ones where you stick around to read loads of content, have plenty of ‘white space’.

Space between lines on a page or post.

Space between the main content and the sidebar.

Space between widgets and menu items…

Lots and lots of space makes your website easy on the eye and clearer to read.

6

If you have access to your site’s code and are confident with things like padding and margins, you can increase white space this way. If not, look for themes or templates which have an uncluttered, spacious feeling.

So what do you do to make your blog look and feel nice? Share a link in the comments so we can all have a peek!

Master These 3 Things Before You Read Tarot Professionally

$
0
0

Blog-20150401-3-things-before-you-read-tarot-professionallyYou know what the Tarot cards mean without having to flick your way through a Tarot book, and you have a few handy Tarot spreads up your sleeve.

You’re ready to become a professional Tarot reader and start charging for your Tarot readings, right?

Uh – hold that thought for just a second.

Do you know what to do when your client asks you when they will get pregnant or why their husband is always talking to the next-door neighbour? And do you know how to avoid those awkward moments when you draw a blank or don’t know how the cards fit together? Or your client complains because they haven’t got what they expected from the Tarot reading?

You see, many aspiring Tarot readers make the mistake of ‘going pro’ too early and find themselves struggling to deal with the challenges associated with reading Tarot professionally. Their readings feel disjointed and unclear because they haven’t found their ‘flow’. And ultimately, they feel out of integrity because they’re not offering their absolute best to their clients.

I was in the same boat when I first started reading Tarot professionally in the early 2000’s. Sure, I knew what the cards meant and I could pull together a decent reading. But when I had disappointed and/or difficult clients, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t have the strategies and techniques in place to deal with them effectively (or avoid them altogether).

Sure, over time, I worked out what I needed to do, but if only I had those strategies from Day One! What a better experience it would have been!

So if you’re thinking about ‘going pro’, I want to do you a big favour and share the 3 things you need to master (beyond learning the Tarot card meanings and spreads) before you start reading Tarot professionally.

1. Know What Kind of Tarot Reader You Are

Are you the type of Tarot reader who can predict exactly when and how an event will occur? Or are you the type of Tarot reader who believes in a more ‘open timeline’, depending on the actions a client might or might not take?

Do you believe that our future is set in stone? Or do you believe we create our own destiny?

Do you do your best work answering quick ‘yes or no’ questions? Or do you prefer to delve deeper into the cards andexplore the complex dynamics of a situation?

Let me tell you, there are no right or wrong answers here.

What is most important is that you are clear about what kind of Tarot reader you really are, and how you believe the Tarot works.

Why? Because it means that you can set clear expectations about what you, as a reader, can and can’t do with the Tarot cards.

And when you set clear expectations, you will attract the clients who value your style of reading, and you will avoid the clients who do not (thus avoiding all the issues around disappointed or difficult clients).

Do this now. Ask yourself, “What kind of Tarot reader am I? How do I believe the Tarot works? What can and can’t I do with the Tarot?”

2. Know How to do a Tarot Reading, From Start to Finish

If you’re thinking, “Oh my, Brigit, I totally know how to do a Tarot reading from start to finish. Duh!” then listen up.

I am not simply talking about shuffling the Tarot cards, laying them out and reading the cards. I am talking about engaging with your client from the moment they even know you exist, all the way through to ensuring they are well-supported long after the reading is over.

You see, many Tarot readers just focus their energy on the reading itself. But what they don’t realize is that the Tarot reading starts long before the client is even in the room.

You want to make sure you’re attracting the right people (especially now that you’re super clear on what type of Tarot reader you are!). You want to make sure that you are creating the right space – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. And you want to set clear expectations of what your client will experience with you during a reading.

And, of course, as you do the reading, you want to make sure you’ve got to the heart of the question, you’ve selected the right spread and you’ve uncovered the story in the cards.

And finally, after the reading is over, you want your client to feel supported and you want to know if you’ve served your client to the best of your ability.

Do this now. To help you master the art of Tarot reading, from start to finish, I’ve created a special Quickstart PDF for you – 7 Steps to Accurate & Insightful Tarot Readings. You can download it free here.

3. Practice with Strangers and Get Real-Time Feedback

Before you even think about reading Tarot professionally, please, please, please get some experience reading for strangers (free of charge) in exchange for feedback.

I don’t mean reading Tarot for your super-supportive mum or sister, or your neighbour’s cat. I mean reading Tarot for an absolute stranger who you have never met before.

I know – it can be scary at first when you read Tarot for a stranger. But trust me, this is a VITAL part of your development as a Tarot reader.

Strangers will ask all sorts of weird and wonderful questions (helping you to set your boundaries about what you can and can’t do with the Tarot). Blog-20150527-why-cleaning-up-your-image-might-actually-hurt-your-tarot-business-with-Hal-Weeks

Note from Brigit: You’re going to get a kick out of this post, whether you agree or disagree with what Hal Weeks is about to share. You see, Hal has taken the bold point of view that maybe as Tarot readers, we don’t want to ‘upgrade our image’ to something more spiritually dignified or respectable. In fact, Hal is calling on Tarot readers to embrace their darker, more occult side and step into the secret mysterious world of Tarot.

Now, I don’t necessarily agree with everything Hal has to say, but I certainly admire his alternative, if not controversial, perspective, and I hope you will too. Over to you, Hal…

When we attempt to change the image of the tarot reader: are we shooting ourselves in the foot?

There is so much buzz in the “Tarot Reader community” about upgrading our image…becoming more respectable!

Note that in admitting that we are trying to ‘change our image’, we acknowledge an already a well established image. When we can take advantage of that, why would we want to change? Is it an image that repels?

Let’s face it…what we are dealing with here is occultism; and that’s actually good for business.

“…look into my crystal ball…”

02_high_priestess

There is allure in peering into what others can’t normally see.   Note my terminology: “allure”, “peering” (covertly) — “can’t” (which plays with impossible, “occult powers”) and “not normal” (read: paranormal). This is our advantage, our offering, our skill that others don’t have, and it’s a HUGE marketing draw.

Part of our trade has always been “you can not see what lies hidden…but I can… and for price, I will tell you what I see…” People want to play along with that game. It creates a perceived risk: “Will this be B.S.,” the client wonders,” “or will this actually help me?”

“Am I safe?” the sitter wonders…. Like a roller coaster ride, the “danger” of getting an “occult reading” adds “tingle”. If we sanitize ourselves and reassure the sitter with Board Certifications and Posted Statutes of Ethics and Verifiable Credentials, we are saying “you are in the safe realm of verifiable and sanitary institutionalism” and are not allowing them that doubt. Where’s the fun in that? Where’s the “occult tingle” of drawing something from the shadows? Furthermore, that doubt is part of the client’s feeling of power and control in an unknown situation…if they doubt, they can always write it off…which helps them walk in the door: “it’s for entertainment purposes only”…. If it’s “Just a Game” then they don’t have to take it seriously. If it’s Just a Game, they are more likely to spin the Wheel of Fortune.

The Wheel of Fortune: Take a spin.

10_Wheel_of_Fortune_v2(1)

In Vegas, we may quite possibly lose…but we might win….again that lure, a temptation that draws people in droves; not to mention “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. (In the Shadows.)

With Tarot, we are also gambling….the shuffle of the cards (reminiscent of Vegas) is a random gamble. Chance, fortune, and that “unsafe” element (unsafe to the daylight of ego) again creeps in…who can resist?

The Devil: “What’s Puzzlin’ you?”

15_devilJust yesterday I was talking to a woman who confessed, “I went to see a psychic once, long ago…of course, I didn’t tell anyone about it…”

People WANT to sneak off to a Tarot reader…because they might be having an affair…or be wrestling with some forbidden choice….and they certainly don’t want their families, neighbors, friends, associates to know that they are seeing a card reader. It’s a shadow thing: they are even sneaking off on themselves. And don’t we want them to sneak out their back doors and into ours? How well do we play to their “secret desires” when we drag our profession out of the shadowy realm and into the light? Aren’t we rather playing to our own desire to be accepted in mainstream society and market ourselves using the same strategies as Pastors and Psychologists?

The Hermit: A little bit Hierophant, a little bit Devil

09_hermit(1)John the Baptist was a hermit, living out in the wild places, eating bugs, wearing animal furs: talk about image! And he wasn’t about to clean up…or become acceptable. Imagine: Pastor John: 3 piece suit, Pastorate from Baptist Seminary. No, John’s spooky nature was part of his attraction. He was risky. Kings, Queens, Generals….all have made their clandestine visits to the old seer.   (And “Kings, Queens, and Generals” is a pretty good demographic!)

When “Kings, Queens and Generals” want good pizza, do they go over to that shop –all stainless steel and halogen lamp– where they are offered bean sprout and water chestnut pizza, or do they line up around the block at “Mom and Pop Rotini’s”? Sure…some will try ‘shi-shi’ new age pie once… but MORE will flock back to “Mom And Pop”. Pizza entrepreneurs know to play to that “traditional” mindset. They use checkered tablecloths, brick walls, lots of green, white and red and an “old world family recipe” to play to what folks are looking for….Those who attempt to recast themselves with trendier look or vibe usually flounder. (Which pizza places in your district have been around for years and years and years?) And okay, maybe we “WANT” to break the mold, and become “MORE RESPECTABLE” and such….Maybe we want a different image…just to be different…for marketing…. But do we WANT that badly enough to shoot ourselves in the foot….or would we rather go where the dollars are?

5 of Wands = Striving

5_wands(1)Winning against competition. 5 of Wands, baby.   Lots of competitors with their eyes on the same prize: the Tarot Dollar.

Here’s my competition challenge: you go right on ahead and use words like “Ethics”, “Tarot Consultant”, “Councilor”, “Interactive” and “Certified” in your SEO…(feel free to use stainless steel and halogen lamps as well.) In mine, I’m gonna use terms like “Secrets,” “Hidden,” “Occult,” “Future,” “Prediction,” “Temptation,” “Forbidden” (and, because I read on people’s sex lives,) “Sex”…Let’s just see who gets more hits, shall we?

So if we’re not going to groom a stainless steel and halogen image, what do we do instead? Am I proposing we all ascribe to a racist Gypsy stereotype? Definitely not. In marketing we want to look different from one another. Here’s where we have to get creative, because we need to be different from each other, AND different from society.   I could pour a lot of suggestions into this paragraph, but honestly, whatever I come up with will be for my little freak show… You have to answer this creative question for yourself!

Whatever we decide, these things need to be “us”. Obviously, you can’t be something you’re not. We are talking IMAGE….and bottom line, does “Tarot Reader” really fit with the “Certified Clinical Consultant” image?   Doesn’t that sort of throw people for a loop with it’s incongruities?   We are talking “allure” here…”tingle”…so whatever you can drum up, use it!   But please reconsider assuming the model of the mainstream clinical world: where’s the tingle in that??

Have I rattled your cage enough?   If I did, you can do your cage rattlin’ right here….leave a comment….fight back….fume and frenzy…steam and stamp….

The Tarot Reader’s Guide to Copyright

FB-Blog-20160512-the-tarot-readers-guide-to-copyright

One of the most common questions I hear from Tarotpreneurs is, “Do I need copyright permission to publish Tarot card images and other content on my website, blog, Tarot readings, materials, etc.?”

You see, what many professional Tarot readers don’t realise is that there are laws about what you can and can’t publish on your own platform, especially when it comes to other people’s content.

It doesn’t matter whether you have a Tarot website that only your mum has ever visited or you have a website with millions of visitors every year – you need to respect copyright laws.

So today, I’m setting the record straight and answering your questions about copyright. This is my personal guide to copyright so that you can avoid the nasty consequences of being tracked down or worse, taken to court, for copyright infringement.

(Note: I’m a Tarot reader and a successful business owner, but I am NOT a lawyer and therefore this post does not represent legal advice.)

When it comes to copyright and Tarot, what is OK and what is not OK?

Let me make it really simple for you…

Do not:

  • Use Tarot card images on your blog, readings, eBooks, teaching materials, etc. without permission
  • Copy word-for-word Tarot card meanings for your blog or Tarot readings without permission
  • Use images found on Google search or other people’s websites without permission

(Do you see the common theme here? You need permission!)

Do:

  • Ask for permission in writing
  • Provide attribution (only after you have permission)
  • Create your own images, photos, content – it will be so much more personal and meaningful anyway

How do I get copyright permission?

First, find out who owns the copyright.

For Tarot cards, it is usually the publisher of the deck. Look for the © sign – often on the cards or in the Little White Book.

For text and content, it is usually the website owner or author.

For images, you may need to do some extra research to make sure you know exactly who owns the copyright. In some cases, it may be the website owner, but in many cases, it is a stock photo company in which case you need to go straight to the source and purchase the image.

Once you know who owns the copyright, request permission.

Email the copyright owner and give the following details:

  • What content you want to use
  • How you plan to use it
  • Where it will be displayed
  • If it is for commercial or non-commercial use

If you are requesting permission to use the Rider Waite images, contact US Games here.

Make sure you have the copyright permission in writing so that if you are questioned about copyright in the future, you have evidence to show that you were granted permission.

You may also have to display attribution – a short sentence to indicate you have copyright permission and who the content belongs to.

Do I have to pay for copyright permission?

In some instances, no. In other instances, yes. It is completely up to the copyright owner to decide if there will be a fee for copyright permission.

You might be wondering how much you have to pay. Again, that is up to the copyright owner. It might be $50 or it might be $1000+. Be prepared!

What if the owner doesn’t give their permission?

Then don’t use it. Plain and simple.

Find another publisher, or make your own.

Do I really have to do it?

If you’re ‘bootstrapping’ it and barely scraping by as it is, you might be wondering if it’s even worth getting copyright permission.

Here’s my view: It doesn’t matter if you have just 1 visitor a year or 3 million visitors a year – you need to get copyright permission.

If you violate copyright, you can be taken to court and required to pay significant fines.

I don’t know about you, but I would prefer that doesn’t happen!

So yes, it is worth it. And it’s part of being an ethical Tarot business owner.

Take Action

Look at your website and other materials you use in your business. Are you using images, content, videos, etc. that are not your own? Have you requested copyright permission to use each and every one of them? If not, do it now. It will save you a lot of pain and hassle later down the track.

And now, here is your host Brigit Esselmont.

Introduction

Brigit:    Hello and welcome back to the Biddy Tarot podcast. I love being able to take a sneak peek behind the curtains to find out how different Tarot readers do their readings. In this episode I get to discover how one psychic Tarot reader works with her clients in a face-to-face environment, from attracting her clients with her funky, flower-covered glitter bike to meditating with her clients and sharing her wisdom from the Tarot cards.

This Tarot reader is affectionately known as Sara the Psychic, A Sydney based reader with a unique and grounded Tarot reading style and, of course, a love for Tarot tattoos.

Brigit:    Welcome Sarah Barry. It’s so good to have you here.

Sarah:   Lovely to be here.

Brigit:    Well to get us started I would love to hear about your journey with Tarot, but more so how did you find Tarot or sometimes it’s how did Tarot find you.

Sarah:   Well, it’s interesting because I hear so many Tarot readers talk about how they felt basically drawn to the Tarot. Something kind of overwhelming happened. For me it was a very slow entry point, but I guess over a short period of time.

I had my first Tarot reading at a festival in Byron Bay in the late 90s. I was kind of, “Oh yeah, there’s a Tarot reading.” I had another Tarot reading not too long after that. I was like, “Oh yeah, another Tarot reading.”

I wasn’t overly drawn to them, but then in 2000 I started attending a meditation group and Tarot cards would invariably be drawn out at some point during the group sessions. I was introduced in a kind of not very direct kind of way.

Then just one day offhand I said to the woman who was running the meditation classes, “I’ll do your next Tarot workshop whenever that is.” I was just a bit bored and looking for something to do. Then not too long after that she said that there was one coming up and I said, “Look, I can’t afford it anymore. I’ll do the next one.” She just said, “Look, just come and pay me when you can because I’ve only got two other people in the group and I need at least one other person.”

I went along and paid when I could, which was some months later. Yeah, that’s when I got drawn in because the way that she taught was very intuitive and I had been struggling learning the Tarot up until then because I had been trying to understand the book and I couldn’t wrap my head around it at all. Just being able to sit with the cards and observe them and feel them in a very intuitive way, I found that I could finally get it. That’s when I just started going crazy and did Tarot readings for all friends and family that would let me to readings for them.

Brigit:    Nice.

Sarah:   Yeah.

Brigit:    Can I ask you how old you were at that time?

Sarah:   I was 24 when I started learning. I was 25 when I started doing readings professionally. Then I was 26 when I went full time.

Brigit:    Okay, yeah. Fabulous. It’s good to see, I think it’s quite a short trajectory in terms of start with Tarot and then going to professional Tarot readings. Not that that’s not a good thing or a bad thing at all. I think often times people get scared that like, “Am I good enough,” before they can become professional.

Sarah:   Totally.

Brigit:    It’s nice that you just got straight in there.

Sarah:   I think I was at a time in my life where, because I hadn’t had a career at that stage. I was finishing up at uni. I was working at video stores. I was used to living on a bit of a low income, so it wasn’t really this big leap of faith for me to go and do Tarot. I always saw Tarot as inherently very creative, so it felt like the very natural thing to do coming out of art school.

What I was surprised by was how quickly I got fascinated by it and how that’s all I wanted to do. I just started dropping all the video store days and hassling all the shops, the New Age shops, going, “Can I pick up another day here, what about this day, what about that day.”

Brigit:    Yeah. That’s great. I think having spoken to a few people about their entry, particularly into professional Tarot reading, there certainly is that element of hustle and just being courageous and putting yourself out there and giving it a go. Wonderful.

These days how are you engaging with Tarot in your everyday life?

Sarah:   Everyday life? Well I’m there with it at least four days a week in my Tarot office when I’m meeting with my clients.

It does inform me. I don’t always pull a daily card, but I usually have a Tarot deck beside my bed at night and sometimes I’ll pull a card before I go to bed just to see, I don’t know, whether it will influence my dreams or not.

That was actually one thing that I did do in the very early stages of Tarot, learning about the Tarot, is that it was suggested to me to sleep with different Tarot cards underneath my pillow at night, so I did that. That was actually really interesting because I remember the two incidents that I slept with the Devil card underneath my pillow.

Brigit:    That’s the one to choose.

Sarah:   I know, it’s like why not. I can’t remember doing like the Empress or Temperance or anything. I just remember doing the Devil. It was really interesting how both those dreams ended up in a similar kind of fashion. As I was awaking I was punching the pillow beside me, I was like punching someone off me in the dream. It was really interesting that that only happened when I had the Devil card underneath my pillow, but yeah.

Brigit:    Wow. Wonderful. Now, obviously, you’re doing professional readings. The name you use for your professional readings is Sarah the Psychic. The question I have for you which may be somewhat of an obvious answer now is like what style of Tarot reader do you see yourself as.

Sarah:   Okay, well yeah, psychic Tarot reader.

Brigit:    Was it obvious.

Sarah:   I mean that name was originally given to me many years ago when I had started doing Tarot readings. I made some new friends. Their household had many Sarah’s in their life at that stage. There was about 17 Sarah’s, so they had taken to giving all the Sarah’s different names to help them differentiate them  and tall Sarah was already taken and when they realized I was a Tarot reader said, “Oh, Psychic Sarah.” It just kind of stuck because that is how I do Tarot.

I see my style as very grounding and approachable and the psychic stuff for me – I do my best to – the way I approach my life is to approach life without systematic belief systems I guess. I’m not religious in any form, but I’ve also been very aware just though being exposed to the New Age community that there can be a lot of belief systems, but we may not see it as that. I believe say in spirit guides, or totems, or past lives and stuff.

While I don’t disbelieve in any of that, I just choose not to work with that actively because the way that I like to work with my psychic energy is without any kinds of pictures. For me it’s more of a feeling thing and it’s without attaching it to any association that I have with a particular image or a color.

For example, I’m not sure if I made that very clear how I work. It’s kind of hard to talk about this.

Brigit:    Yeah, yeah. I think it’s interesting because I think say with the word psychic in particular, there’s a certain maybe stigma or a shared understanding of it as maybe someone who can speak with spirits. Although, I guess that’s a medium. Or someone who can see into somebody’s future and know exactly when something will happen or even see a picture in their head of a scene or hear things or feel things as you do. I’m curious what’s kind of your understanding of psychic. What does psychic mean to you?

Sarah:   For me, for the way that I work, it’s just having a sense of how the future is tracking forward for someone. I can often feel timeframes as well. To me it feels like if I say, “Oh, around this particular date or around this particular month,” there’s a sense of it feeling appropriate to say it.

The way that I see psychic energy as well is that we’re all masters of our own destiny anyway. The things that happen in our life are reflected by the choices that we’ve made up until that point even if we’re not aware of those choices. Something that’s seemingly quite small and insignificant could blow out into something bigger.

I see all of us having multiple pathways and then we have choices as to which pathways we choose to connect with at any moment. That’s when we really have to go with our own intuition so that in a reading I’ll be describing the pathways that I feel are strongest and therefore more likely to unfold in a particular way.

For me psychic is just tracking the future possibilities that have a strong likelihood of unfolding in a particular way.

Brigit:    But it still enables the client to use their free will to say, “Nah, I don’t want to take that path.”

Sarah:   Absolutely.

Brigit:    “You might see it as a likelihood, but I’m going to take this other path. Thanks very much.” You see that as a possibility there.

Sarah:   Yeah, totally. Totally. Just for myself situations in my own life where I’ve, sometimes I feel that, okay, so just an example, I remember one particular day. This has happened more than once, but the first time it happened I just remember at the very end of my work day suddenly wishing that I hadn’t ridden my bicycle in to work that day.

I really felt a lot of, “Oh, this is not a good idea to ride home.” But then I said, “Oh, public transport, nah, it sucks. And I don’t want to leave my bike at work. It’s just easy to ride home. It’s only ten minutes. I’ll just do it.”

I got on my bike. Then after about one minute, I got off my bike because I was feeling really ungrounded and I just kind of stood on the pavement with my bicycle and refused to get back on the bike until I felt really, really in my body and really just grounded and clear.

Then I got back on my bike and I rode for ten minutes home. In those ten minutes I had so many near accidents. It was ridiculous. Everyone was like flying out of, I mean my bike’s covered in flowers and glitter; I’m easy to see. I’m wearing bright clothing. I’m like this big kind of, but people can’t see me on this day, so it was really intense.

I realized later, I said, okay, so one of the pathways that day was for me to possibly have an accident of some kind. I chose by pulling myself up, by recognizing how ungrounded I was, I pulled myself off the road and reconnected and then another pathway revealed itself, which was when I could get home safely.

Brigit:    Yeah. I think that’s a really good example. I mean I’m glad you got home safely. That’s the important thing.

Sarah:   Yeah, I know.

Brigit:    But it’s a great example of how we still have some level of control over our future. I think tapping into psychic awareness doesn’t necessarily mean that you are set to a predetermined destiny or future, but we’re just tuning into that and then can make more guided decisions which will keep us safe and protected and so on.

Sarah:   Yeah. Yeah.  That’s what I like to offer in Tarot readings is that sense that people can handle whatever may occur and the more they trust their instincts, the more likely they’ll be able to choose pathways that will be beneficial. Even if they do seen a bit hard at the time that they’ll be able to see what they’re learning and being able to gravitate through it without losing their mind in the process.

Brigit:    Yeah, yeah because I have often heard people who are very new to Tarot readings, more as the client versus someone who’s actually using Tarot for themselves, they often have this big fear around, well I don’t want to have a reading because what if it tells me something bad then something bad is going to happen. You think, “Oh, I feel so sad for you and having that belief because it’s not intended in that way.”

Sarah:   No.

Brigit:    Sounds like that’s what you’re also working with when you’re working with your clients. It’s more about the sort of empowering and helping to make more guided decisions about life.

Sarah:   Yeah, yeah.

Brigit:    I’m curious to hear how does a face-to-face reading with you play out. Could you walk us through step by step what a typical experience might look like with you?

Sarah:   Yeah. Sure, okay. Well it starts in a predictable way where people press the buzzer and I buzz them up. Then I’m waiting for them at the door. Sometimes they get, the building that I’m in is a bit like a rabbit warren, so sometimes it takes them a little while to find me.  Then they come.

I tell them where they can sit. Then I ask them if they want a cup of tea or some water. I’ve got like about 30 different teas they can choose from. It’s a bit overwhelming. Then I sit down. I ask them if they want me to record it or not. It’s all included in the price. Depending on what they decide I either record it or not.

Then I let them know a bit how I work. I guess what I invariably say pretty much word for word at the beginning of a reading is, “I’m just going to let you know a bit how I work because every reader works differently. I’ll just meditate for a couple of minutes and then I’ll begin. When I do begin I prefer to have no information from you for at least the first five minutes just to get a feel for the undercurrent of things and to get my head out of the way, but then I will check in at the five-minute mark to see if there are questions or areas that you want me to focus on. If not, I’m more than happy to just go with the flow. If at any point you want me to clarify anything or talk more or less about something or even not about something at all, please just jump in and interrupt me, so I can make best use of your time.”

Then I say I’m going to meditate for a couple of minutes and they can join me or just hang out. People either sit there and close their eyes or they just kind of look around the room or sit there nervously or drink on their tea or something, I don’t know.

Brigit:    Yup. Waiting to see you start like levitating or something.

Sarah:   Yeah.

Brigit:    One eye open.

Sarah:   I didn’t use to say that spiel. I always started with the meditation. I’d always just kind of sit there with my eyes shut for a few minutes. Then I’d begin. I had this thought people should just figure out what I’m doing and be okay with that, but then I realized I’ve got to make this easier for people. Of course, a lot of people this is very new for them. Some people just kind of figure out, “Oh, yeah, she’s meditating,” and join me, but they might be expecting that I’m going to start talking in tongues or something. There might be all kinds of fears that are arising for them.

With the help of my supervisor who’s a woman that I saw as a psychotherapist in my 20s then when I started doing Tarot full time, I asked her if she could be my supervisor. Every now and then, every few months or so, sometimes more often, sometimes less often, I just meet with her to discuss any aspects of just my business and about setting boundaries with clients, any tricky situations I’ve had, and she offers really great advice.

One of the advice was that I let people know what the hell I’m doing. That I give them a spiel at the beginning so that that just really helps put them at ease so that the reading can progress in a much more calm fashion.

Brigit:    Yeah, yeah. I think setting the expectations up front is so important as well because as you said earlier, every Tarot reader works differently and I think every client has a different idea of what Tarot is. I suppose they can walk in there with their different preconceptions you just want to make sure that you’re on the same page before you get under way with the reading.

Sarah:   Yeah, yeah.

Brigit:    Did you find then that once you started being a little bit clearer about what you were doing, did you find sort of the energy changed in your readings.

Sarah:   Oh, totally, yeah. I think people were less nervous. People usually once I begin anyway, once I start talking they calm right down anyway, but just to put them at ease a lot more quickly.

I found that often people even if they have never meditated that they just kind of sit there quietly and people often say that that’s great because they  just don’t have the time to sit quietly at all in their life, so it really changes the energy in that they’re feeling a lot calmer themselves.

Course a lot of the time people arrive rushing. They’ve just been trying to find a park or they’ve just been rushing off the bus or the train. It’s hot and they’re all sweaty or whatever. It’s just really nice for them to just sit before we kind of dive right into the juicy stuff.

Brigit:    Yeah, yeah. I think that’s a really good idea.

Sarah:   Yeah.

Brigit:    Do you work with a question or you’re just working with whatever is coming to you through the cards and through sort of more your intuition.

Sarah:   Initially, yeah, I prefer to have no question upfront, just for the first bit, but then I do check in because sometimes people do come to me because they like that go-with-the-flow kind of style, but sometimes people do have very specific questions. I’m happy to work with questions or go with the flow.

The go-with-the-flow style was kind of forced upon me in my early years just from being young and having people very sceptical and kind of giving me nothing. As I result I just kind of was forced to learn to just go with the flow and to work with no information.

Now that I’m older and people are less sceptical of me because I’ve come up with my website and they can get a feel for me anyway that, that they do offer information if they feel they need to. Yeah, I’m happy with questions, but they’re not necessary in order for the reading to go ahead.

Brigit:    Yeah, yeah. Wonderful. When you’re in the reading, you’re laying the cards out, what’s sort of happening for you as you do that reading?

Sarah:   Okay, well first I pretty much always start with a particular spread that I made up just before I went professional. I remember freaking out going, “I have to have my own spread before I can see anyone that I don’t know.” It’s kind of stayed the same, but I’ve just changed my understanding of it over the years.

It’s just three at the bottom, two in the middle and one at the top. It’s like a triangle. It just kind of gives me a sense of what people are moving away from where they’re at right now, what they’re moving towards. What’s influencing them and what’s kind of working with them part time right now and will probably work with them a fair deal more over the next few months.

That couldn’t go sometimes for most of the readings, sometimes it’s just for the first five minutes or so. But I place them down facing me. I just gaze at them just to kind of get a feel for how it all looks together and then I turn the cards around to face them so they can have a look. Then I start to talk. Once I’ve talked about all those cards that are present, then I do check in to see if there are questions. Then we go from there.

Brigit:    Yeah, wonderful.  Do you find that the majority of the reading is a delivery of information from you or are you having more of an exchange with your client? How does that work for you?

Sarah:   It does vary. A lot of it I’d say, the majority of the time is delivery from me.

Sometimes, it doesn’t happen that often, but sometimes people just every time I check in they say, “No, I’m happy just to keep on going with the flow,” and they offer pretty much nothing the entire time. They’re very open with that. They’re just enjoying it and they just want to see what arises. Sometimes it is me just pretty much talking for the whole time.

Sometimes it does get into an engaging more of a dialogue. I guess it just depends on what people are wanting to work with. I’m happy to shift around with my style to adapt to where people need to be. Sometimes they just need to talk about something really big that’s going on in their life, so I let them talk more. But I would say for the vast majority I’m doing most of the talking.

Brigit:    Yeah, okay. Cool. Have you ever had a situation, maybe someone’s booked in for 60 minutes and you look at the clock and it’s like, “Oh my goodness, it’s 40 minutes. We’ve covered everything,” and we’re like, “Have you got any more questions?” Has that ever happened to you?

Sarah:   Yeah. Well you know what I do now is if it feels right I say, “Hey, look, we’re nearly, I know you booked in for 60 minutes, we’re coming up to 40 minutes now. I’m happy. I feel like we may have covered everything. I’m happy for us just to finish at 45 minutes if that feels right for you, but if there is something burning that you want me to look at then let’s go for it. I’m happy.”

Sometimes people do go, “Yeah, you know what, I think we’ve actually talked about everything. It feels really good to finish here,” or sometimes they remember something massive that they hadn’t talked about and we do keep on going.

I play it by ear. I don’t want people to stay if there’s nothing more to say for both of our benefits, I guess. I don’t believe in wasting time and energy, but that doesn’t happen that often. But there’s usually more to say I find. Once I check in with people they usually want to keep on going because there’s something bigger emerging all of the sudden.

Brigit:    Yeah. Have you ever had clients where you feel like, “I’m not getting anything.” You know, you sort of get five ten minutes into the reading and maybe they’re not giving you much. I don’t mean just by words, but energetically or there’s just something getting in the way of you being able to share helpful information. Have you had that experience?

Sarah:   Oh yeah.

Brigit:    And what did you do? Instead of like freak out and run out of the room. I can’t do this anymore.

Sarah:   Yeah. It’s funny. It’s interesting. It happened a lot more in my earlier days, I guess. When it does happen in this time, I mean right now, when I do feel confident about reading the Tarot, it’s often when people are going through something really, really intense and I mean really intense and really full on. In that moment I think they’re far better off seeing a psychotherapist or a psychologist, but they’ve come to see me.

I can just sense that there’s only so much that I can say because it’s not, the way that I see it is if I’m not really feeling anything, it’s because there’s something, there’s another kind of therapy that they’re meant to be seeking out this time and they’ve just chosen the wrong one in that moment because me talking about the future unravellings is no good unless they’re going to be looking at certain behavioural patterns that they aren’t participating in. Their experience has got to be a lot more self-reflected rather than just kind of a nice little soothing balm for me to encourage them and inspire them.

Brigit:    Yeah. I’ve noticed that too. That sometimes I think clients might come to a Tarot reading expecting the answer, the one thing that’s going to make their life better and when you’ve started to get into that process with them you realize, “You know what, this is probably like a six – twelve month journey with full support and someone who’s probably much more capable of really helping someone to unravel and rebuild and so on versus a Tarot reading. It’s interesting to hear you’ve had that similar experience.

Sarah:   Yeah. And because I see, the way that I like to work the Tarot, I say on my website, I ask people to wait for at least a couple of months before having another reading with me. That’s at least. It’s good to allow time to unfold.

The way that I work for my style of Tarot reading is that space has got to happen to let life happen, to trust the intuition, just to keep on going with the flow and letting things unravel in life because things do invariably unravel. Things are always changing.

Whereas a psychotherapist role is about that week to week or fortnight to fort night. It’s a much more regular intimate relationship so that will dive down a lot deeper. I think a lot of the time people that seem to be quite closed in a reading are usually in need to something that’s a lot more deep and intimate on a more regular basis.

Brigit:    Yeah, that’s a good observation. When it comes to the end of the reading, do you do anything special to kind of wrap up that reading or how do you bring a reading to an end.

Sarah:   Okay, well usually I, unless I’m truly lost in it or I haven’t been checking the time, but I usually check in with people prior ten minutes if I can, if not in the final five minutes and say we’re coming up to the last five minutes, is there any particular question that you really wanted to look at for this final bit or any clarity you wanted or do you just want to pull a wild card. Most people want for the wild card. A wild card is just we pull a card and we see what the hell happens.

Brigit:    Go wild.

Sarah:   Yeah, I know. I guess sometimes, my style of readings, it was just the wild reading. We have no idea what’s going to happen. Let’s just go with it.

But the wild card, I guess it’s like the best card for them to work with right now that can help them go out the door and go into the next stage of their life. That’s usually how I finish up.

Brigit:    Wonderful. Then do you engage with your clients after the reading is completely finished, maybe in a month, two months, anything like that or is it kind of like reading, then reading finished and then come back if you need another reading.

Sarah:   Yeah, yeah. The reading, reading finished and come back if you need another reading. They’ll be a small engagement if they had a recording for example. Then I’ll send them an email that night with the recording and just if there was anything in the reading that I said I’d forward on to them, like if there was kind of referrals or a link or a video that I wanted them to look at or something, then I’ll send all that in the email, but that’s just the day of the reading, the evening of it or the day after. Then that’s it.

Brigit:    Yeah. I noticed you also do email readings and Skype readings. I’m particularly interested in how you find email readings versus these face-to-face readings. Do you have a preference or you’re just like, well they’re both different and I both enjoy them. Of course, that’s probably the most politically correct answer.

Sarah:   I do like them both. I do. Interestingly I think, I love face-to face, the reason in this business is because I love sitting with people and meeting with different, there’s this huge cross section of society, so I really enjoy. Then I’m really touched that I get to sit with people that, and have these intimate conversations with them that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. That just wouldn’t happen. I’m touched by that.

There is something really intimate about the email readings because the way that I do them is I ask people just to send their questions, so I will answer their questions, and if they have no questions that’s fine as well, just to go-with-the-flow style.

I do that and I record it, so I speak the reading to them. I take a photo of the cards and send that with the recording of their reading. In some ways that feels more intimate because it’s just me and the microphone. I’m just talking into it and they’re listening to it later that day.

I find that really quite, I really enjoy that. I really enjoy kind of feeling into the cards like that and feeling into their energy and just enjoying how it’s still possible to have a connection with someone even though they’re not sitting in front of me.

With the Skype readings I also enjoy them. It’s interesting, I’m thinking that maybe the email readings sometimes feel more connected and I think that’s really the main reason for that is just technology stuff because Skype is fantastic, but every now and then the screen might freeze a little bit or there’s just a small distortion in sound and then it goes on through, but, or there might be a slight time-lapse between what we’re saying. I think it’s just the fact that it’s not this seamless scenario, but then of course I love that I can sit with people that are in other parts of Australia or in other parts of the world and that we can still have this intimate conversation despite the distance.

Brigit:    Yeah. I think you’ve done a really smart thing offering readings across so many different mediums, excuse the pun. Then you can serve people in the way that probably best meets their needs as well. I always think email readings are so convenient because you don’t have to organize a time to be somewhere and you can meet with people around the world. Yeah, but I think there is something special about face-to-face readings to kind of, I know energy has no boundaries, but there’s something nice about being in the same space as the other person.

Sarah:   Yeah, totally.

Brigit:    I’ve been dying to ask you about your bike. You have this gorgeous flower bike. I’m going to try and get a picture of it and we’ll post it on the show notes on the blog which will be at BiddyTarot.com/27, so 2-7. You can see the photo of the bike there. Tell me how does this bike integrate into your Tarot practice?

Sarah:   It gets me clients. It serves as a sign. People will see the photo. It’s covered in chunky silver glitter and rainbow flowers and it’s got signs on it saying Tarot Readings with Psychic Sarah, my phone number, my website. Also, in the back basket as well, it’s just a picture of the Ace of Cups and SarahThePsychic.com, so people driving behind me can see it as well.

It’s my most successful marketing tool really. I don’t really have to do anything except ride to work and there I go. Park it and kind of see it’s more popular than I am. It’s got more photos on the internet than me. Every now and then I’ll do like an Instagram search where I type search then, “Hey, there’s my bike.”

Brigit:    Did you think it was going to be so popular or viral when you decided to do the bike or has it just kind of evolved that way?

Sarah:   I didn’t think, I can’t actually remember what exactly I was thinking. I had always been into decorating my bicycle, but it used to be very subtle, just a couple of stickers and maybe a couple of flowers.

Me and a friend used to have this thing where we’d secretly attach flowers or stickers to each other’s bicycle if we were out and about and we saw their bike somewhere. It kind of happened with that. I thought that’s really, truly joyful just decorating the bicycle.

Sometimes people actually do put gifts in my bicycle as well. People say, “I see you bike everywhere. I love it so much.” I think I did do it just because I like flowers and also because I wanted to be more visible on the road, so there is a practical element to it as well. But now I do see it as quite a bit of community service as well.

When I went to Europe for six weeks in 2010 and when I got back the man who did I think the shoe repair guy on the corner  a couple of doors down from where I used to do readings, and he kind of grabbed me on the shoulder and says, “Where has your bicycle been?”

Brigit:    He’s missing you.

Sarah:   I said, “Well you know, it’s raining today, so I didn’t ride, but I was away for six weeks.” He kind of said with this choke in his voice, “Bring it back.” I went, “Okay.”

Brigit:    Oh, that’s lovely.

Sarah:   I’d see him standing outside on his cigarette break, like guarding my bicycle and stopping people from touching it. I think it really inspires something in people. It’s a marketing tool as well as a joy giving tool or something like that.

Brigit:    That’s perfect, absolutely perfect. Love it. Just to wrap things up, have you got a top two or three tips that you might give someone who’s considering starting to do face-to-face readings professionally. What would be kind of like your top two or three?

Sarah:   Mine I guess are quite practical because I guess as you, people will see as they start to work with the public that they’ll be faced with a lot of energy and the need for self-care will be strong so that they can be the best readers that they want to be.

I would recommend having some kind of meditation practice. I meditate every day. If I didn’t meditate every day, I doubt I’d be able to work as a full time Tarot reader. There’s that.

I would recommend having a supervisor or just someone that you can speak to in a confidential manner, a professional that you can go and visit that you pay for. It’s fully tax-deductible, so you can talk about any aspects of your work in a very safe and confidential way to protect your client’s privacy of course, but then also just to make sure that you’re not sharing stuff with people that aren’t meant to hear it.

Brigit:    Yeah, sorry. With the supervisor idea, this is something that I think will be so important for so many readers and yet it’s not something I hear many people doing, so I’m really glad that you’ve brought up today.

Sarah:   Yeah, cool.

Brigit:    Because I think a lot of people could get a lot of value out of having a supervisor. It goes beyond having a Tarot teacher and how do you read the cards. You’re actually having maybe a mentor or more formally a supervisor in place so that you can check that you’re doing things ethically and you’re on track and you’re taking care of yourself. I’m glad you brought that one up.

Sarah:   Also, because I remember when I was going into Tarot reading professionally that I’d look around and I’d see, I couldn’t see any Tarot readers that were really great role models and that were looking after themselves like they seem to be might be having some kind of mental health issues or just kind of going into spaces, mental health, it doesn’t have to be difficult, I mean more mental health intensive, having a strange way of observing themselves and perhaps seeing themselves as some kind of god or just having an inflated sense of self.

I think having a supervisor keeps you humble because you’ve got someone that can say, “Hey, well, you know, maybe that wasn’t so ethical. Maybe do it this way instead,” because meeting with the public you will be meeting with people that have gone through, who have had really horrific things go down in their life. You’ll meet many people who are crying.

There’s just so many aspects and to be able to – people wanting to be your best friend, wanting to call you all the time. There will be people wanting to jump over your boundaries, so if you’ve got a supervisor in place, then you can have a way of learning how to deal with that so that your personal life doesn’t have to suffer because of the public work that you do.

Psychotherapists and counsellors, they all have to have supervisors, so I just see well, I know Tarot readers don’t really have to do anything because we’re not really recognized as anything formal anyway, but I take that seriously, so I’m just going to treat myself as if I am a psychotherapist even though I know I’m not, but I’m still dealing with people in a similar way, in an intimate professional way, so I’m going to do it for myself.

Brigit:    Yeah. I think that’s a really great way of looking at things. You’re not obligated to, but you recognize the value boost to yourself and your clients of doing that. That’s great. Wonderful. It’s been so fun talking with you Sarah.

Sarah:   Yeah, you too.

Brigit:    I would love to be able to share where can people find out more about you if they want to learn more about your readings or even no matter where people are in the world they can find out how to get a Skype reading with you. Where they should go?

Sarah:   SarahThePsychic.com.

Brigit:    Too easy.

Sarah:   Yeah.

Brigit:    We’ll make sure that we have that link on the show notes as well, which you’ll find over at BiddyTarot.com/27. You can also leave comments for Sarah if there’s something you want to ask her or just your thoughts and observations from today’s podcast. Sarah, again I want to say big, big thank you for being a part of the Biddy Tarot podcast and sharing all of your experiences as a professional Tarot reader. I know it will have helped many, many people, so big thank you.

How to Stand Out on Psychic Hotlines with Fiona Benjamin

FB-Blog-20160609-how-to-stand-out-on-psychic-hotlines-with-fiona-benjamin

Note from Brigit: Many Tarot readers start their careers reading on psychic Tarot hotlines. But, it’s not as easy as it might seem with many experiencing burn-out and overwhelm. Well, not any more. In this blog post, Tarot professional Fiona Benjamin shares her very best strategies on how to master reading Tarot on psychic hotlines. Over to you, Fiona…

I got my start as a professional Tarot reader by reading on psychic hotlines, which I found to be a rewarding experience. If you are starting to do readings on psychic hotlines, it may feel overwhelming to try to stand out among readers who have thousands of five star reviews and are killing it on the website. Don’t worry!  You too can achieve success on psychic hotlines with these seven tips.

1. Use your New Reader Status to your Advantage

This is the time to be logged in as much as you can, because there are long time clients of psychic hotlines who will scroll through the new readers and give them a try. Usually, they are looking for a fresh voice and feeling out the new readers. Take advantage of this by being logged on for as long as possible to catch the attention of these people.

Know that most of them will already have a “favorite reader” and may not return to you, but you want to make a good first impression because if their favorite reader quits or isn’t online during an emergency, you may be the next reader that they turn to.

2. Use a Clear Picture of your Face

Having a clear, smiling photo of your face builds trust. It literally puts a face behind the bio and the reading. Allow the picture to be a good indication of what kind of reading your client should expect from you. They will be scrolling through readers and your picture is the first impression they will get, which can say a lot about you.

Generally, people look for someone relatable. A 35 year old woman working a corporate job will probably relate best to a tarot reader who is a female, looks like she’s also in her thirties, and dressed professionally. A 21 year old bohemian spirit may relate to a younger reader wearing something thrifted, and holding up a deck of colorful tarot cards.

I understand that some people may not be out of the “reader closet,” especially for those that have a full-time job that might look down on tarot reading. If this is the case for you, then you may have to just go ahead and skip including your picture, but know that it will make it more difficult for you to compete with other readers who have the chance for people to get a sense of them from their picture. Still, don’t let that discourage you! You can do a lot with a wonderfully set-up photo with extra details like crystals or statues in the shot.

3. Take Advantage of your ‘Short Bio’

People come onto hotlines because they want something and they want it quick. They don’t have time to scroll through all of your information. Let them know who you are and what you do so they know whether you’re the right option for that inquiry. If not, they may come back and hire you later if you fit the bill, but if they have no idea what you’re about, you’ll get passed over.

This is not the place to write in big caps: LOVE ANGEL READINGS TAROT PSYCHIC—ouch. Don’t shout at your potential client! Instead, place a tagline that encompasses who you are and what you do. Here are some examples to get you started:

“Loving Angel Card readings about relationships.”

“Let’s talk about your business with financial tarot readings!”

“Root-work consultations with playing card readings.”

4. Have Consistent Hours

Imagine this scenario: you’ve been wanting to get your nails done for weeks now and every day, on your way to work, you pass by this awesome nail salon. One day, your boss lets you out early–leaving an opening in your tight schedule. You rush over to the nail salon just to see that it’s closed, with no explanation. The hours aren’t listed and this is the one time you’ll get to have your nails done. I bet you’re going to just go somewhere else and never give this salon another try, right?

Working on a hotline is similar. You may feel like you’re not getting clients, but you don’t know if people care eyeing your profile, waiting for payday to hire you for a reading. Also, past clients who love your readings will want to return to you, but they need to know when you’ll be available.

Extra tip: Place your schedule right on your bio so your clients know when to expect you.

5. Keep a Small Log of Who your Clients Are

It doesn’t have to be overly detailed, simply write down their first name and a sentence or two about what you talked about. It is impossible for you to remember all of your clients, especially when you start climbing up in the ratings and more and more clients come to you. A few sentences should spark your memory of the client when they call. It’s a great feeling for a client to know that you took extra effort to remember who he or she is!

6. Ask Your Client to Leave a Review

At the end of a reading, I usually ask, “Is there anything else I can do for you?” and if not, I ask, “May I trouble you, (client’s name), to leave me a review? It would mean a lot to me.” The worst that can happen is that the client says no or doesn’t leave a review, but if you ask, they usually will leave something nice, especially if you were gentle and compassionate with the reading. Your ratings are a huge factor, along with your hours and tagline, so ask!

7. Stick to One Hotline

You may be tempted to sign up for 3 different hotlines and work them all to determine which one will pull a client first. However, this can get complicated because now you’re investing your time into more than one hotline. Instead, invest your time into making a name for yourself in just one.

Last but not least, a bonus tip to trump all tips: Be patient. It takes time for you to build a reputation in a hotline and to have a client base. Pour love into your work, stay consistent, and take each day as a learning experience. Over time, you’ll be the one with a thousand and one five star reviews. You’ll get there!

Have you worked at a psychic hotline? What was your experience like? Let me know in the comments section below.

FB-Blog-20160623-the-starting-a-tarot-business-spread

Starting your own business – whether it’s a Tarot business, a coaching business or even a dentistry business – can be scary and overwhelming. How do you know if you’re making the right decision? Is this really the path you want? And will it be successful?

Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against you. 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months (Bloomberg). And of those who survive, only a small fraction make over $100,000 in profit.

So, before you make the leap to start your own business, you want to know you’re going to have the best chance at success.

One way to do this is to consult your Tarot cards to make sure that you are truly ready for this epic journey.

In today’s post, I share with you my ‘Starting a New Business’ Tarot Spread to help you discover whether this is indeed the right path for you, and how you can make it a success in its early stages.

The ‘Starting a New Business’ Tarot Spread

This is a 13-card spread that is meant to take you on a deep-dive of your psyche, so you can really suss out if the entrepreneurial path is right for you. If a 13-card Tarot spread is a little overwhelming for you, pick out 3-4 questions from above and use those to create a more simple Tarot spread for yourself.

Here is the ‘Starting a New Business’ Tarot spread:

  • How am I in relationship with starting a new business?
  • What do I want my business to look like?
  • How do I want my business to fit in with my life?
  • How can I align my new business with my soul purpose?
  • How will I know when it is the right time to start my new business?
  • How can I personally prepare myself for this journey?
  • What opportunities can I leverage in the first 12 months of business?
  • What challenges might I experience in the first 12 months of business?
  • How can I overcome these challenges?
  • What are my blindspots right now?
  • What people and/or resources are available to me?
  • What steps can I take now to start my new business?
  • Overall, what might I experience if I start this new business?

An Example Tarot Reading for Starting a New Business

I love giving practical examples of Tarot readings and spreads so you can see how they really work.

Now, since I already have an established business with Biddy Tarot, I am going to ask the Tarot about a new business idea – coaching online business owners who want to grow a spiritually and financially abundant business.

Let’s see what the cards have to say…

(I’m using the Radiant Rider Waite deck for this reading because of its grounded, practical energy.)

Starting a new business tarot spread

How Am I in Relationship with Starting a New Business?

Nine of Pentacles – I’m starting from a place of abundance and wealth already. I have created success in my current business and this carries over into my new business.

What Do I Want My Business to Look Like?

Two of Cups reversed – I may steer clear of 1:1 coaching and instead focus on group coaching models.

How Do I Want My Business to Fit in with My Life?

Ten of Cups reversed – I want to keep my family life very separate and private from my work life. I’m also aware that this new business may create some ‘ripples’ in my current work-life balance that I may need to manage in the future.

How Can I Align My New Business with My Soul Purpose?

Hierophant – My soul purpose is to teach and educate large groups, both around systems and structures, and spiritual guidance. If my business can do that, then I am in soul alignment.

How Will I Know When It Is the Right Time to Start My New Business?

Three of Cups – When I have a fun group of women around me, either as potential clients or colleagues.

How Can I Personally Prepare Myself for This Journey?

Wheel of Fortune – Expect the unexpected and go along for the ride!

What Opportunities Can I Leverage in the First 12 Months of Business?

Strength reversed – I can leverage my inner strength, personal conviction and subtle influence to help others create a transformation within.

What Challenges Might I Experience in the First 12 Months of Business?

Five of Pentacles – Financially, the new business may not be as fruitful as expected – have a Plan B in place. Also, be careful of who I attract. Those with a poverty mindset may not be my best clients.

How Can I Overcome These Challenges?

Two of Swords – Be very conscious about the decisions I make, especially when it feels as if there is no one right answer. Instead of getting stuck with indecision, look outside of the issue for the answer and move forward.

What Are My Blindspots Right Now?

Seven of Swords – What role does deception, betrayal and stealing play as I consider my new business? Be mindful of copycats or others who may falsely accuse me of copying their work.

What People and/or Resources Are Available to Me?

Ace of Cups reversed – Given this is a reversed card, the best resources may come from within, rather than outside of me. Look for creative ways of expressing myself through the new business.

What Steps Can I Take Now to Start My New Business?

King of Wands reversed – Ask myself, “What do I really want from this business? Is this the right time to action my new business, from an internal perspective?”

Overall, What Might I Experience If I Start This New Business?

Fool reversed – A false start or a premature start. Now may not be the best time to start in this new direction.

Overall, the Starting a New Business Tarot reading gave me a deep insight into what I might expect if I were to start a new business and how to make it work for me. But, while I have played with the idea of starting a fully-fledged coaching business, I know deep down that now is not the time. I love working with the Biddy Tarot community and helping Tarotpreneurs build their businesses, but I don’t think it is the right time just yet to branch out into broader business coaching. And this is certainly evident in the Tarot reading!

Over to You

Are you thinking about starting a new business? Why not pull out your favourite Tarot deck and use the Starting a New Business Tarot Spread to find out if this is the right time for you to pursue your bright ideas.

Share your reading and your insights in the Comments below. (I won’t be able to personally interpret your Tarot reading, but I’d love to read how you’ve used this Tarot spread, and what’s come up for you in your reading.)

Today I want to share with you; three really inspiring stories from our free Tarot readers. These readers are offering free Tarot readings on Biddy Tarot as part of the community in exchange for feedback and for practical experience in reading for others.

I think you will love these stories because they just show how you can turn these kinds of opportunities into amazing learning experiences for you as a Tarot reader. All three have gone on to read Tarot professionally, but at the same time, they also have had these amazing learning experience that has really lifted their confidence and given them these opportunities to work with some many different kinds of clients and situations and questions and so on.

Without further adieu, I would like to welcome on our first guest, and this is Duane, from Colorado. Welcome Duane, the first question I want to ask you is: “What was reading Tarot like for you before you started doing the free Tarot readings?”

Duane:  You know, reading on BTN, I just didn’t have the confidence to really totally put myself out there, so for me it was, I hesitate to say it was a hobby but it was really more of something that I did with friends, family and stuff. But it wasn’t until after I got about half through BTN, it was like, I am in love with this. Yes, BTN was like, no question about it. The beauty for me now, because now I kinda have gone professional and am picking up clients and stuff, but I have no intention of dropping off of BTN because the one thing it does is that it gives me more diversity than I would probably get on my own. In terms of people from around the world, and different situations. But the beautiful thing is that you find out that people are all the same and when it comes to the spirit. They all have the same hopes, dreams, concerns, worries and stuff. It is just beautiful.

Brigit: Yeah. Yeah that is a really interesting insight, because I think one of the advantages of doing the free readings is you get to see the big diversity, the different kinds of questions and cultures and expectations and so on. But as you say, there is kind of like this thread that just goes through all of that diversity and brings it together. And the way in which you can serve that diverse community is actually in a very, sort of wholesome consistent way, I suppose.

Duane: Yeah, and I actually am finding that I prefer to do readings this way in terms of email, because for me, my rhythm is, I will do a reading tonight yeah, but it was assigned to me yesterday. It gives me an opportunity to see what the clients question is and then sit with it, let that energy move in and then formulate my questions in pick which deck that I am going to use and everything. It just gives me a little bit more of a space to connect more deeply with that person and what they are looking for. So I love it, I mean, I get generally pretty solid feedback, I think of all the readings that I have done, I can probably count on one, maybe a hand or two at most, situations where I never heard back, at least so far.

Brigit: Yeah.

Duane: So, I’ve had great success there and I don’t look for the feedback anymore. I mean early on, as I was building my confidence, the feedback was really important, but and I would type out my response and then go back and reread it and make sure. At this point, I am so confident, I just, whatever spirit is moving through me, whatever is coming out goes on to the email and then I hit the send button. It is like, it is what it is, you know?

Brigit: Yeah, and then I suppose having the experience with the BTN and doing free Tarot Readings, how has that been for like your learning journey or how has it developed your Tarot reading skills?

Duane: Well, it is all about practice, right? And again, it is that diversity that is really quite interesting because you get the opportunity to reflect a little bit about somebody, even the cultural differences when people ask questions and things. So, it is, for me, I would even when I get to a point where I feel like I am really super confident, the cards are supernatural to me. I don’t foresee unplugging from BTN, because it is just yet another outlet and I feel like it is almost becoming more of a service opportunity for me. So, now that I have my professional practice going, here is an opportunity for me to give back to the world in a unique way.

Brigit: Yeah, that is wonderful. I know sometimes when I have looked through some of the requests that are coming through, I kind of think: “Oh, I would love to jump in here and do a couple of readings too.” And I really resonate with that idea of offering a service and perhaps it is also helping the general public get a balanced perspective on Tarot. There is so much, unfortunately, crap out there, it is really great the more that us doing professional, ethical readings, if we can get that out there, we are changing the way that people see Tarot.

Duane: Yeah and I have had a lot of people in my private practice now, because I talk about that I do these free readings with BTN and they are like: “Well, how does that work?” And they are really curious about that, and I think your right, it does elevate the practice and the divine quality that comes forward and the ethical Tarot reading because people, are kind of like: “Wow, you can actually connect with people that you have never known and you are doing it via email and it’s accurate?” It’s like, yeah, because that is the way spirit works. And you just kind of get the wow, you just blew my mind type of thing.

Brigit: Yeah.

Duane: Reactions, so yeah, you are absolutely right, it just helps to move all of us into a better place in terms of the minds of the public and what their perceptions are.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful and how is doing the free Tarot readings help to, now in your professional reading practice?

Duane: Well, I think for me, at times it’s a matter of me, I guess being put on my game, right? Because some of the things that I get in my professional practice is pretty much I can anticipate what is coming, because I know a lot of these people now and so, I have a general idea of what their needs are and I know them at this point. Having done a number of readings for them. But this is always some strange question or some request that is like, oh, I haven’t had this one before, you know? And so, it continues to expand it expands my ability to be able to look at the cards in a different way. It challenges me to continue to be deeper into the cards, because some of the questions are very, very different than what you would have expect maybe in a face to face or somebody that you know at least, right?

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful. Excellent, and another question, has just popped into my mind, if you were to talk to someone who was at this very beginning of their journey with Tarot and they are thinking: “Oh my goodness, do I do this or do I give free Tarot readings or I don’t.” What would be your advice, one piece of advice to someone at that point in their journey?

Duane: Well, the only piece of advice is you don’t get any better just staring at the guide book or re-watching video classes or whatever. You just have to get out there and do it and BTN is such a safe environment because of the way you set it up, it is just that people kind of understand that a lot of the readers are just getting started in their practice so that feedback is really, really important to them. So, yeah, it is just a matter of just get in there and do it, right.

Brigit: Yeah, absolutely, great advice. And one final question for you, particularly as you are reading professionally, where can people find you if they wanted to connect with you for a Tarot reading?

Duane: Well, the only way to find me right now is via email. It is duane@connect2action.com. I am in the process of totally revamping my website and adding some other things to my practice, some crystal healing work and some angel card work as well, so I am totally reworking it so at some point it will relaunch, but email is the only way to get me right now.

Brigit: Wonderful, awesome, thank you so much, Duane, it has been really, really good. Our next free reader that I want to introduce is David. David is a Scotsman, but living in Sydney, Australia. Welcome David. Alright, tell me what was reading Tarot like before you started reading on the free Tarot reading site?

David: So, for me, it was, I did an intensive Tarot course to get me started and absolutely fell in love and it felt like a real kind of natural thing for me to be doing, but then obviously I needed to practice so I was doing a lot of readings for friends and reading for myself and grabbing anybody that I could to read for. And that was really good, it was really useful but it was kind of limiting because there was only so far that I could take that. And it was just, I was kind of missing dealing with, not necessarily strangers but dealing with people that actually had burning questions. Because it was more like I was forcing it, I was like oh, have a reading, have a reading other than people actually saying: “I need a reading or I got an issue that I want to question.” So for me, at that stage I didn’t feel confident enough to put myself out there, definitely not as a professional reader or even to put myself at charity events, so then I thought that I didn’t feel like I had enough, kind of breath of experience and enough knowledge to go that far. So that is why I started looking for options to offer free readings, to really build that experience, so that is what kind of led me to the Biddy Tarot Network.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful and once you got there what has been your experience of giving free readings, what has that been like for you?

David: I can honestly say in terms of Tarot journey for me, it has been absolutely amazing and with out a doubt the most valuable thing that I have done in terms of learning, in terms of dealing with real people with real issues, with real questions and been able to feel like actually adding value, you know you’re really able to help these people.

So, there is a couple of things it really helps with confidence, because the real kind of golden nugget is that you are getting feedback, you are getting constant feedback and some times it is really detailed, you know some people just send the reading was really great, but others just send in really detailed feedback so there is a couple of things that it gives you. A, it gives you confidence to know that you are actually giving accurate and safe readings, but at the same time, just also give you confirmation that you are doing the right thing, that you are actually helping and these people are, and your guiding these people on a path. But just through the being able to practice for free readings as well, it gives you an opportunity to try new things so you are constantly learning. I started reading reversals, and I have gotten new decks or I wanted to practice with the new deck so I was practicing that and then even new spreads, discovering new spreads on the way. And at first I was a little dubious about reading online because everything I had done, my practice so far had been face to face, and I thought how would this work, will I be able to connect with people, but very quickly, I mean as soon as the feedback started to come in, I know you have been there, even when you just start reading, you can feel that connection and it was absolute confirmation for me. This works, it really does work and online is no different to me from reading face to face. In some ways, I think it can be, you can get even more insight because you really rely on your intuition rather than, kind of relying on what your seeing in front of you. That is what I have felt anyway.

Brigit: Yeah, I really agree with that, because I think it keeps you on your game, and you don’t have that opportunity, either to keep checking in like: “This card means this, what do you think about that?”

David: Yes.

Brigit: You just have to go for it, don’t you?

David: Definitely, both are really good and both are good for different reasons but it does, you are absolutely right, it keeps you on your game, it keeps it interesting as well.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful, and having been part of the free Tarot readings, what has it enabled you to do now that you couldn’t do before?

David: So, I have, this has unlocked a Pandora’s box for me, I have got a hundred ideas going around, but in the last month, I have launched my website, I have launched my Facebook page and started reading professionally as well. Which is really good, I have also started reading at markets on the weekends, so I am doing face to face readings as well as online readings. It is just, A, I have got the confidence, B, I just have found that I have done so many free readings, that I really have been able to tap in much quicker, so I am able to flick that Tarot switch on and start reading really quickly. Where as before I had to really, you know, I was with the books, I was studying, I was trying to deliver them, but now I can just switch on, I am definitely still learning, I would never profess to know everything, there is still a lot to go. But yet, I have got other exciting projects in the works, like for instance, my day job is I do HR and recruitment at the moment, so I am looking at a way of combining and maybe doing some kind of course where you can, through my day job and through Tarot, to help people unlock what really their skills are and to help them identify what that dream job is and then look at kind of practical steps to help them get on that way. So, that is one of the things I am working on, but I have got a hundred others in the mix, but it is all very, very, very inspiring and really kind of helped me, it has given me a new kind of energy and a lease on life as well. It has been great.

Brigit: Wonderful, and it is so exciting to see Tarot integrating with all sorts of things, particularly HR, like I also have an HR background and I always thought how on earth will HR and Tarot ever come together. But they can, you know, career advice, I love doing career readings because you not only adding new Tarot insights, but you also have got clear knowledge around HR and recruitment, for example. It is great to see that come together.

David: Yeah, I love when I get, through the free readings, when I get the career questions because it just feels, I mean I like answering a broad range of questions, but the career ones, I feel like that I can add an extra layer because I can connect my kind of knowledge of that side as well as my Tarot knowledge. So, it just adds an extra layer I suppose.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful, and I think it also speaks to people from all walks of life can read Tarot and I think that is a great thing because it means we can each bring our own unique skill set and knowledge on to the Tarot table, so to speak. And, you can work it in all sorts of different ways that make it really exciting.

David: Definitely, and that is what I have discovered just through this whole journey, and through the community that you have created as well. There are so many different types of readers and there is no right or wrong. But my style is very practical, very down to earth and I try to take the mystic out of the Tarot in some ways and just make it a really practical tool for helping people through the life journey. But other people are reading in a completely different way and I would never, ever judge that because I think that there is just so many different paths that you can go. That is what keeps it interesting, and I think, for clients it should be about finding the right reader for you.

Brigit: Absolutely, yeah, if you where to speak to somebody who was perhaps at their start of their Tarot journey and they are thinking: “Oh do I do free Tarot readings or not?” What would be your, kind of, one piece of advice to them?

David: I am a huge advocate, I would say, 100% do it and I would say you need to do it. It is something that anybody that I speak to that shows slight interest in Tarot, I point them to the free reading site because the Biddy Tarot Network has been invaluable and genuinely I think it is an essential piece of anybody’s learning to do readings and to do readings for strangers as well and to get feedback. So I would say absolutely do it, help the confidence, make the jump because there is, what is great about it is, people know what they are getting into and they know they are working with aspiring readers. So you have a chance, you will make mistakes and that is fine, but this is how you learn, it is a huge learning opportunity.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful, excellent and David, you are reading professionally, where can people find you if they wanted to have a reading with you or connect with you in any way?

David: My website is www.tarotavenue.com and my Facebook page is just tarotavenue.

Brigit: Wonderful, we will make sure that those are included in the show notes, so that people can click through and check you out. Thank you so much, I am thrilled to bits that your experience has not only helped you on a learning level, but professionally and that it has given you that confidence to now start your own business, that is just awesome.

David: No, well, I want to say thank you to you and this has just been an amazing ride so far and I am looking forward to continuing the journey. I am still doing free readings, because I still find it really useful and I will continue to do that as well.

Brigit: Yeah, fantastic, awesome, alright thank you very much. Thank you so much David, I really appreciate our conversation. Our last reader that I would love to introduce to you is Lorenda. Lorenda comes from Indiana, in the US. Welcome Lorenda. What was Tarot reading like for you before you started reading on the free Tarot reading site?

Lorenda: Well, to be honest, I like to refer to reading Tarot cards as learning and communicating in a foreign language, that is how I try to explain it to people, that I am learning a language of my guides. The difference between doing the readings here and there versus about three to four times a week with Biddy, in addition to my growing clientele is the difference between taking a Spanish class once a week versus going to Barcelona and being immersed in the language. So, before Biddy came along, I guess, before I found Biddy, my readings were more hit and miss without the consistency of doing them on a regular basis. I feel like I wasn’t learning and growing as fast as I could be. Also, wasn’t near as confident as I have become since starting back in November. I feel like that BTN has really has helped me take the frustration of memorizing the meanings of every card out of my readings.

Brigit: Yeah, awesome, wonderful, and what was the trigger point for you that said, ok I have got to do this?

Lorenda: You know, it is just one of those things where I have been playing around with cards for a long time, I have done readings for friends and I have done some paid readings but I like to go online and just check things out and check out different meanings of things and I just kind of stumbled along and it just jumped out at me as something, Oh, I can do this, this is really cool, I like this and I just started clicking around the site and it was literally that fast and that easy.

Brigit: Yeah, yeah wonderful so it was just kind of like you just knew this was gonna help you. Wonderful, so once you got in there and your doing free readings what has been your experience so far?

Lorenda: Well, at first I was really nervous that I wouldn’t be able to connect with people’s energies, much less read for them or answer their questions. But I found that reading for people I don’t know, online has been remarkably easy. Because sometimes, I find with phone readings or even in person readings I would pick up on their body language or their reaction and I found that, or that they would make some sort of vocal, oh or oh really, you know so when you get those reactions you tend to second guess yourself when you are still learning and trying to figure things out. So then, I would, I would second guess myself and I would kind of backtrack a little bit where when I am doing these online, I am just listening to what I am hearing and I am putting it out there. I try to do everything in a positive light of course, but I am not afraid to tell the stories that my guides are showing me. Sometimes I will see things that I know are my situations that they are trying to, again, kind of translate a language so I have to find keywords to give them within these readings and kind of explain, ok, this is what I am seeing, this is the word I am hearing, so hopefully this relates to you.

And then, I find that by doing that I find that I can leave it all out there, hit send, be done and then to hear the feedback later is even better because then sometimes, they will be like: “This absolutely made no sense to me, this is really the situation.” And then I can go back and do, not a follow up reading, but more of a ok, this makes sense, I can plug these things in and explain a little bit better and then it all comes together, but the initial send off of that message is so much easier than doing in person readings. I know that sounds crazy but it is just so much easier.

Brigit: Yeah, it is kind of counterintuitive isn’t it, because you would think that email readings could be harder because you are not getting immediate direct response.

Lorenda: Right, exactly.

Brigit: I think, you know I really resonate with that idea that you kinda just have to put it on paper, inbox and send it off and hope for the best, kind of really pushes you to up level your game.

Lorenda: It really does.

Brigit: And it is great also to hear how you work with your clients feedback so that you are seeing that kind of as an intuitive process and if you do get feedback that maybe this thing was off target and you are taking that going, well maybe how else could I look at it that sort of fits what I have heard.

Lorenda: Yes, absolutely, and it really has made a difference in some of these readings when I have just kind of gone off on, not on a tangent but kind of gone off on my thinking and how things are going and to hear their input truly does, it just brings it full circle and it makes me feel better to know that I am on the right track so then I just have to make notes, ok, note to self, when I see that particular person in my vision that I am hearing Grandma, that doesn’t mean that I am seeing their Grandmother, that means that I need to say the word Grandma right now. That could anybody’s Grandma but I just need to say the word Grandma. And so when I see, what I noticing is that the more readings that I do, and this is where this the BTN has really helped me is that the more I do the more I start remembering and processing, oh wait I saw this in another reading that I did, obviously this is not their person that I am seeing, but this is the word that I need to say right now. And it makes so much difference, so much difference and I am starting to see an improvement in my readings and more accuracy in the readings.

Brigit: Wonderful, it kind of feeds into that idea that intuition is a muscle and you have to keep working that muscle.

Lorenda: Yes, absolutely.

Brigit: For it to get stronger, yeah, wonderful. And tell me now what are you able to do with your Tarot reading practice that you couldn’t necessarily do before?

Lorenda: The big thing that i have notice, is that I have a network of people to work with. Kind of where I live, I know there are a lot of people that love Tarot cards and psychic parties and they love all these things but they would never say it out loud. But if you invite them, of course they are going to do it. But they would never tell their friends. So, it is really hard to find that network of people, but what I have found is that being one of the free readers, you know I have access to all these tools and all these resources and I can bounce ideas off of people. I can read about their struggles or their interpretations of things and offer my input as well and the resources of the networking has just been incredible for me. Of course any time you are sharing energy, with people who have that higher understanding of the energy and how to be receptive to it, it is a really amazing thing to go through, I guess. It is nice, there is comfort in numbers, i guess.

Brigit: Absolutely, yeah most definitely and are you reading professionally?

Lorenda: I am, I have been in just probably really, I have been doing readings for a long time, but I just always felt bad about charging people and I had a reading by someone who is very well known in the industry and I think my guides, that was their point was: “You need to charge.” “No, I can’t do that.” And I feel like they kind of brought that reading to me because I actually, he said: “Why aren’t you charging, you wouldn’t go to work and work for free would you?” So yes I do, I do charge now, but it is only been really recently when I felt like I had the, a better understanding, and I feel like I had the confidence and the know how to really stand by my product, I guess, for lack of a better word.

Brigit: Yeah, absolutely and do you think as you grow professionally, do you think you will continue to offer free readings in this kind of learning practice environment or do you think you see yourself shifting towards a full professional model?

Lorenda: You know what, to be honest, I like, it is my way of giving back I guess, so I like having that connection I don’t mind doing the free readings. Because I know that there are people that need it, they need that, that time, that reassurance, that maybe they can’t afford to do right then. So it doesn’t bother me to do that and also the learning factor to keep on point. I am not going to be flooded with readings all of the time, you know my website is not going to be crashing for paid readings by any means, so this is a great tool for me to continue building my skills so then eventually I can do more paid than not. But I enjoy doing the free readings.

Brigit: Yeah, wonderful and I have certainly have heard from the other two that I have spoken to that sort of joy around being able to give back and to continue the practice of reading tarot so that they kind of fuel your professional readings as well. Yeah, it’s cool. I f you were to talk to someone who is perhaps at the start of their Tarot journey, what would be kind of like your one piece of advice to them?

Lorenda: Don’t read into it to much. Don’t think so much. It really is important to, before you even jump into this, step back, quiet your mind, find a meditation that works for you. And then when you look at the Tarot cards, whatever one you are drawn to, doesn’t matter what deck you are drawn to, whatever deck you are drawn to, look at it and see what you see in it. Don’t try to memorize everything, try to get an overall feel for the card is it, are you seeing sunshine does it feel warm, what kind of colors does it have, how does it make you feel? Because you know what, to be honest, no card has an absolute definite meaning. You can look, you can buy 10 different books and everyone of them can say that the fool means something different. Ok, so what I find is you have to find that underlying meaning of each of the cards and then understand what your guides are trying to tell you. You have to listen, more than talking you have to listen. And just trust that when you hear something, just say it, you know, just say it, put it out there, because chances are that it is not your thought, it is not your job to filter it either. So, that is what honestly been my biggest, the biggest thing I had to overcome, I had to stop assigning meaning to everything, I just listen, and it is not about me, it can’t be about me, it is about the person that I am trying to help, that is asking me the question.

Brigit: Yeah, it is as if as if you are a conduit, is kind of how I see it and it is not your role to sort of manipulate the meaning, and I don’t mean manipulate as a negative thing, but you know like, sort of change the meaning or make it significant to that person, you only need to convey the message as it is in ints purest form.

Lorenda: I am not, I will tell people, I am not the interpreter, it is not my job to interpret what they are saying or what they mean, it is just my job to translate, because not everybody speaks Spanish you know. So, if I am the translator in the room, I don’t have to understand everything that person is trying to say and what the message means to the person I am delivering it to, it is not my job. It is my job to just say the words and to relay the message, it is your job to figure it out.

Brigit: Yeah, the translation analogy, I think is great. Because if someone is speaking in Spanish, you wouldn’t try to paraphrase everything  that they are saying, you are just saying the words that they say, you wouldn’t put your own spin on that.

Lorenda: Exactly.

Brigit: Yes, Interesting, as you are reading professionally is there a place where people can come and find you, what is your web address?

Lorenda: Yes, I actually have my web page is called SIGN, it is an acronym for Spiritual Insight and Guidance Network, I have a Facebook page, that is a private page, so you have to ask to join, but I will let you in and then I also have my webpage is the same thing, so if you where to google search that, that would come up, but the actual web address is www.messagesfromtheotherside.weebly.com.

Brigit: Wonderful, alright, we will make sure that also is in the show notes, so that it will make it super easy for people to click through and find out more about you.

Lorenda: Great, great I would love that.

Brigit: Thank you so much, that was absolutely wonderful and I am thrilled that you are enjoying the experience with the free readings. And yeah, we hope to continue seeing you doing awesome things.

Lorenda: Absolutely, and one thing I would say if anyone is considering doing, being a free reader, becoming a free reader, probably the one thing I benefited most from is requesting my own reading going through the process first so I would know what other people on the receiving end would be expecting. So that is the about the only other thing I would suggest people considering it, I highly recommend it and I have to several people, because I have really enjoyed it.

Brigit: Fantastic, awesome, well thank you so very much, it has been an absolute pleasure to speak with you. Thank you so much, Lorenda, I really appreciate it.

Alright, it has been my absolute pleasure to share with you these three, real life stories. I think having listened to these conversations; you will start to notice a few key things. One is this opportunity that these readers have really grasped in order to build up their learning, their practice and skills and confidence with Tarot. You can just see, for each one of them, having had that experience, reading for free has really allowed them to grow in so many amazing ways as a Tarot reader. You will also hear this theme of being able to give back to the community and being able to serve and help others in a really beautiful soulful way. I think that is absolutely just lovely and the more that we can do that, the more that we can change the perception of Tarot in the general public and really give Tarot a wonderful name for itself. Which is a great outcome.

Third, you have seen that doing these free Tarot readings has helped to elevate the readers. Particularly in a confidence level and has given them that next step into their professional Tarot reading careers. Each one of them is at the very early stages of reading professionally, but I bet if we connect back with them in a year’s time, they will have gone on to do amazing things.

Introduction

Brigit: Hello and welcome back to the Biddy Tarot podcast. I am so excited to have you here as always.

Now when I first started doing Tarot readings online, I started by offering email Tarot readings. It was the perfect fit for me, I was young and fresh faced and I really didn’t want to be judged about not looking old enough or wise enough to read Tarot. And I was also studying at University so I really had to have a flexible schedule for doing client readings to fit around all my essay writing and going to class and so on. And as time went on, I started working full time and eventually had two beautiful girls and in both of these cases, email Tarot readings continued to be the perfect fit for me as I needed a way to read for other’s professionally but really in my own time and with that possibility of being interrupted every now and then.

But I want you to know that email Tarot readings aren’t the only way to do a Tarot reading online and they are not always everyone’s cup of tea. So, today I am going to share with you five different ways that you can do a Tarot reading online. Plus, I am going to outline the pros and cons of each method and also what kind of reader it suits best and how you can get started. And that way, you can listen to these different ways to do an online Tarot reading and you can choose the one that fits you best. This is going to be a bumper podcast especially if you’re thinking about becoming a professional Tarot reader online or you’ve recently started your Tarot business. I’ve also made a very special PDF download for you, which you can find over at www.biddytarot.com/42. You might be out and about doing a walk, putting shopping away, whatever it might be and you might not be able to write down all of these different methods. So, I’ve put it together into a PDF which again you can download that at www.biddytarot.com/42 and I’ll outline the five methods that I’ll talk about today. You can also get access to the transcript for this call and show notes and all the Biddy Tarot goodness over at www.biddytarot.com/42.

Brigit: All right, so let’s get started. Now, as I said before, I’m going to show you these five different ways of doing an online Tarot reading, but I’m also going to show you a little about how you can get started, what the pros and cons of each are and who this kind of method is best suited to.

So, let’s start with my personal favorite, which is the email Tarot reading. So what is it? Well, an email Tarot reading is basically where you would have someone online, they buy a reading with you and they send you a contact form or an email that says: “Hey, here’s my name, my date of birth and this is my question, all right go and do a Tarot reading for me.” And as the reader, you can do that Tarot reading at any time really as long as it’s in the time that you said that you would deliver that reading and you can type out the reading in say a word document or even a Google Docs, some readers like to do the reading and then take a photo of the actual card layout and attach that into the reading as well. And then you can easily PDF the reading and send it to your client via email. And what I typically like to do, because it’s kind of like very one-way interaction, is I like to give my clients the opportunity to ask questions after the reading. Of course, if it means drawing another card then that is another reading, but I certainly encourage my clients to say: “Ok, I didn’t quite understand this card, what does that mean?” or “Here’s a little bit more information, would that, does that sort of add a different angle to the reading?”

I think with the email Tarot readings it’s also really important to engage with your client up front and make sure that you’re on the same page with the reading. So, for example, if someone asked me: “When will I meet my future husband?” that’s not necessarily a question I feel confident answering purely because I do not believe in exact timing of events in the future, I think it has a lot to do with free will and the actions that you take. So, in that sense, talking with, emailing with your client before you do the reading to make sure that you’re on the same page, it’s really important. And I’m also often asking the client things like: “What’s your desired out come here, what is it that your really want to have happen?” Because that’s how we are gonna sort of frame the reading as if how you can achieve that desired outcome. And I just like to also get a photo as well along side the reading, just so I can get a sense of who this person is and get that kind of energetic connection.

Let’s talk about the pros of doing an email Tarot reading. Well, definitely the most obvious thing here is that you can do the reading whenever it suits you as the reader. You’re not committed to turning up at a specific time, and it’s not ideal, but if you do get interrupted midway through doing the reading, then you can come back at a later time. It’s that sort of flexibility, certainly if you got young kids then or a demanding schedule then that can certainly be a benefit.

Of course, even when I was doing email Tarot readings I would still make sure that I had the time and space to really give it my full attention. There are a couple of times when I might have done it, I was doing it on the train, going into work and sort of half of it at the start of the day and then half on the way home. Not ideal, I wasn’t able to give it my best attention, even though you have that freedom and flexibility with doing the reading when it suits you, you also want to make sure that you are giving it the right attention as well.

The other pro with doing an email Tarot reading is that the client actually has a written record of the reading and I think this is really, really important because something, when I’ve been a client and I’ve gone to see a reader, particularly in a face to face, reading I know that I’ve got these filters on, and I’m often only hearing the information that makes sense to me at that point in time. But if I do take a recording of the reading and listen to it later, I start to realize like: “Oh, here’s all this other information that didn’t make sense to me then but it does now.” And so if you think of an email Tarot reading, it’s very clear about what the message is in that reading, because as a reader you’ve outlined it very clearly in writing. And so then your client can refer back to that reading at any time and I think that can be really helpful. Yeah, it’s definitely very helpful.

I guess sometimes the only down side to having that written record to that reading is that sometimes clients can read into that in particular ways and you do have to be mindful of the words that you’re choosing. Sometimes you might use a word that is sort of more lighthearted for you, not really thinking about it you just write a word, and that could actually be a trigger word for the client. So you just have to be wary of how you’re using your language, make sure that things are clear and, not sort of gray area kind of writing.

The final pro of an email Tarot reading, is that you can kind of protect your identity, if that’s important to you. Certainly when I was starting to read Tarot, I was literally about 20, 21 and I did not look like your average Tarot reader, especially being so young, and so for me because I was sort of had a bit of doubt or I was a little bit anxious about people maybe judging me, I decided that I could just could be online but no one would have to see me and that would be a good thing. So, that might be relevant for you if perhaps you’re working a corporate job and you don’t want people to see who you are. It’s not that you are doing anything dodgy, it’s just that you want to keep your identity separate. So, doing email Tarot readings can help that.

Ok, so let’s talk about the cons, the sort of not so good parts of doing email Tarot readings. You really need to be able to trust your intuition. So, you don’t have that advantage, that I think that you get in a face to face reading where you can see the client’s responses and you can see if their engaged or not, you don’t have that opportunity to ask questions as you go. “Did that resonate with you? Oh, good it did, ok, well let’s keep going into this.” You really, really have to trust your intuition and work that intuitive muscle to make sure that you’re delivering a great reading. I’ve often been in a position where I’m like: “Whoa, this reading is going down like one very specific track,” and I’m thinking: “What if I’m wrong? No, I’m feeling it so let’s just keep going.” So, I’ve had to really, really trust my intuition with email readings.

Also there are some limitations on how you can connect with the client. So for me I do love doing co-creative kind of readings, where it’s me and the client creating this reading together and I’m really holding space for the client to make some personal explorations about a situation, not just me saying this is what’s going to happen. So, there are some limitations in an email Tarot reading because it is kind of one-way communication at any point in time but there’s some ways to get around that. So, when I’m writing out an email Tarot reading, I’ll make sure that I’m asking questions throughout that reading, and it might also be like adding in a few journaling prompts or things that you want the client to reflect on a little bit more. You could even set an activity or a bit of homework, some spiritual homework to do after your reading. And that way your getting a little bit more engagement with your client versus just saying here’s the reading, there we go, all done.

And finally, you do need to be quite a fast typist, I’ve known some folks who’ve given email Tarot readings a go but their like one-fingered typists and their like: “But it’s taking me two hours to do a three card reading.” Oh, goodness maybe this is not for you, so if you are a fast typist then email readings might be just right. I can certainly whiz over the keyboard and bash out two thousand words in under an hour in a reading, so for me it works really, really well. But if you’re a little bit slower on the keyboard, you might get some speed typing lessons or you might look at some different ways of doing readings

So given those pros and cons, let’s have a quick chat about who the email Tarot readings are best suited for. So, I think that it really suits folks or readers who have kids or other commitments in their life. Where they do need that flexibility in their schedule and who may potentially be interrupted, of course you don’t want that to impact your engagement with the client. So, email readings are the best if you’re at risk of being interrupted.

I also think email readings are great for readers who can type fast, of course these practical things really do matter. And who are very good written communicators, so for me language and communicating through writing works very well and I feel very confident in that way, but maybe, let’s say if you were a reader who had English as a second language, you might communicate better by speaking than writing or typing. Or maybe, I don’t know, maybe it might just be a personal preference that writing isn’t really your thing but speaking might be much easier. So just be aware of that.

And then, finally, it really does suit intuitive readers who feel confident about their intuition. It is like, intuition is a muscle so you do have to keep working on it and building it up over time so you might start your email Tarot readings with a little bit of anxiousness about your intuition but over time you’ll notice that it just gets better and better and again these kinds of readings are perfect for developing your intuition. So, that’s it for the email Tarot readings, you might be listening to that and going: “Yeah, I could probably do that, that sounds right up my alley.” Or you might be thinking: “Not really my thing, what else do you got?”

So, let’s move on to the second way of delivering a Tarot reading online, and that is to do an audio reading. So, what is this? Well, it’s a reading where you simply record it, just the audio, so not a video, but just the audio of you speaking your way through a reading. It’s also another, like more of a one-way interaction so it’s almost like what I’m doing right now, which is just talking into a microphone, quite simply and you might have your cards laid out in front of you and you just speak your way through that reading. You can easily record a reading on your mobile device, for example, like on your iPhone, it’s really easy to make a recording on your iPhone. And you could also use some free software like Audacity, which you can just download online and in fact that’s exactly what I’m using right now for this podcast. You can then, I mean, it’s pretty easy, you record it, you can then save it as an mp3, you can reduce the file size if you need to, whatever it takes. Then just upload that audio reading to Google Drive or Drop Box and then you can share the link to the reading via an email to your client. And same kind of thing, you would have your client pay online and then maybe send you an email with their information. You know maybe if you’re really going along with the audio theme, you might have an opportunity of the client to record their voice as well when their sending in their request for the reading, that could be kind of fun. So a few different options there.

So, let’s talk about the pros of an audio reading. Same kind of thing as it is for an email reading, you can do the reading whenever it suits you, but in this case, you don’t really want to be interrupted. Sure you can probably edit it out, you could stop halfway and then come back to it but it’s going to be a little bit more obvious to the client that you’ve had a little bit of a break in between your reading. Ideally you want to have that time and space where you can do a reading where you’re not going to have your kids screaming in the background, that’s kind of hard in this house, because that’s happening most of the time, except during school hours. Which is obviously is how I’m doing this podcast there is some time where it’s quiet here. But you just have to make sure that you’ve got that time available to you.

I think also with the audio readings, when you’re speaking, it can actually be a lot easier and faster to verbalize a reading to speak a reading out and I’ve noticed this with out Tarot students as well. It’s one thing to sort of write down the reading but when students start to say a reading out loud, something shifts a little bit more and I think interpreting the cards can often be a lot easier when you speak through them. So again, you do need to be quite confident with your speaking and if we’re thinking of English as a second language, it may be where you are, you have a strength, or it could also be where you feel that maybe it’s not your strength. Maybe you’re still working through English as a spoken language and so you might actually not do an audio reading, completely up to you of course.

Again, you can protect your identity so you’re not having to show your face in an audio reading and that might be important to you if your managing a corporate career or something else where you don’t want to have other people recognize you as a Tarot reader. And then finally the client has a recording of the reading, and if you really like you could do a bit of value-add in your service, you could do the audio reading and then hire a transcriptionist to transcribe the reading into a word document. And that way they could also have a written record of the reading.

Ok, so what is some of the down sides to doing audio Tarot readings, well you do need to trust your intuition, again, so similar to what we talked about with email Tarot readings because you’re not getting that instant feedback from your client. Again, there’s some limitations on how you can connect with the client, although I kind of find that one thing is to write but then when you’re actually listening to someone, if you think of it from the client’s prospective, they may feel more connected to you as they are hearing your voice and their hearing your intonation, your tone of voice, your volume, all those kind of things, might actually make it feel more of a connected reading then say and email Tarot reading, that’s something important to think about.

You also need to have a mic and reasonably good sound quality, thought I find it’s ok using the built in mic and the same with your laptop but it does pay just to get, I think you can pay like $50.00 on, I use an, what is it, 802020 mic, could have that wrong, I’m just trying to see if there is anything on the mic that’s telling me what it is, no. And also with the iPhone you can use a Rode Lapel mic, which is really handy, you can just pop that on to your shirt or your top and it records straight into the phone and then you get a much better quality sound. So it can be worth investing in, and of course if you’re doing this professionally that can be a tax deduction as well.

Ok, so who is this good for? Well definitely readers who are good verbal communicators. If you feel confident talking and as I think actually, it’s all personal style, but I think if you can remain relatively succinct as you’re talking, that’s a good thing. I know that some folks find if they’re feeling a little nervous they might use a lot of words to describe one concept but you might look at how can you be a little more succinct with your reading and the message that you want to convey. And of course, you might already feel comfortable in that space in which case this is perfect for you. It’s also well suited to intuitive readers, again because you’re not getting that immediate feedback.

All right, let’s move on to our third method, which is doing a reading via video. And I’m not talking about a live video, like Skype, that will be our fourth method, I’m talking more about just recording yourself, doing the reading with a webcam or a video camera of some sort and the audio obviously. Most laptops and computers do have a webcam built in, I’m on a Mac, so I just use Photo Booth to shoot a video. You can get free software online to shoot videos, you can shoot a video on your phone again and have a lapel mic or just do it straight into the phone. If you do use a phone I suggest getting a tripod or putting your phone somewhere it’s not in your hand, because that can make people feel a little bit sick with all the movement. And so you can shoot the, you can record the reading, and it might be you just sitting there going: “Ok, well this is your question here is me shuffling the cards.”

And then they can see that and then you might lay out the cards, maybe use the video to show the cards that were laid out and then you can go through that reading. And I think the really nice thing about this is, it’s a lot more personable, they get to see you as well as hear your voice and so on, so it’s kind of like a live reading but you’ve got the advantage, again, that you can do the reading when it suits you in your own time, you’re not dedicated or committed to a specific time to meet.

Of course you don’t want to be interrupted during a video reading, yes, you can edit it out but it doesn’t, you know it’s a little bit patchy not as easy as the email reading. Oh, and once you do finish your video again, you can use software to reduce the size and then upload to Google Drive or Dropbox and share that link to your client via email. Nice and easy. You do want to make sure that you don’t share it on YouTube, don’t think: “Oh, I’ll just post it on YouTube.” Even in the private version I think it’s a little bit dodgy. Especially when your dealing with sensitive information in a Tarot reading, so I suggest using something more like Dropbox or Google Drive just to help with the security.

Ok, so back into the pros, we talked about you can do the reading when it suits you, providing you won’t be interrupted, it can also be faster and easier to verbalize a reading so same with the audio reading, you create a more personal connection with your client and again the client has a recording of the reading and if you wanted to create a written version, you totally could, just by hiring a transcriptionist. I reckon it might cost you, well ok, it all depends what your pricing is for your readings but it might cost you about $20.00 to have somebody to write up that reading for you.

Ok, so the downsides of a video reading again you do need to be able to trust your intuition, it’s not really a downside but just something to be aware of. You do need equipment, so in this case you need a good mic and a webcam. Most of that is pretty much built into your devices already so I wouldn’t stress out too much about, oh I need to get this new thing. You don’t, you can usually just use what you have. And of course you do need to be comfortable on video. Some people feel a little bit awkward when they’re on video, in which case that might not be for you but I often suggest, like with video, it’s that first video that makes you feel like: “Oh, what am I doing, I look like a doofus.” But you just get that first one done and then you feel much better afterwards. It’s been the same for me with Facebook Live, it was just like, just get on that Facebook Live just once, get that out of the way and then you will be fine, and now I can’t really get off the thing. I enjoy it so much.

Who is the video reading for? Well, certainly for readers who are good verbal communicators and who are comfortable on video and of course you do need to be quite intuitive and confident with your intuition.

All right, let’s move on now to our fourth method which is a Skype reading. As you know, Skype enables you to do a live call with somebody anywhere in the world, for free, which is amazing, and you can be on video and audio and it’s quite simple. All you need to do is install Skype and you can also use a recording software like e-cam or just google Skype, record Skype call. There’s many different ways that you can record the call and that way, again, your client has a record of the call as well afterwards and that’s a great value-add for your Tarot reading offers. You can also use a scheduler like Time Trade or I think it’s Calendly as well, a lot of different schedulers out there because with a Skype reading you obviously do need to agree to meet at a certain time and I tell you what, there’s nothing worse than having to organize via email. “Oh, are you available here? Oh, what time zone is that?” It’s like all this crazy stuff, just invest in getting an online scheduler, it will just save you so much time and just a hassle and be way, way, way better. And I think Time Trade is like literally about $50.00 a year, so yeah, it’s pretty minimal and it will save you a lot of time and it will also mean happy clients. And then of course, once you’ve finished your reading you can upload that recording again via Google Drive or Dropbox and share the link in the email.

The good things about Skype readings are that you can co-create your reading with your client. This is where it can be a lot more engaging because you can ask questions as you go. You can have more of a coaching style of reading. I think it can be really exciting when you do have that live interaction with your client. And again, you can connect real time ,which is really nice. And if you are recording the call then obviously your client has a recording which could be helpful for later on.

Now the downsides of Skype readings, you do need to schedule the appointment and you need to be able to commit to it. Now for me that’s not great because I might have some family commitments and for me generally I’m not great, I just don’t, I don’t know what it is, I don’t really like having to have appointments at set times. I quite enjoy just having that, with a reading particularly, I like to do it when I feel inspired, not when the clock says I need to turn up somewhere. But again, we’re all different, right? So don’t let that interfere with how you want to read the Tarot cards.

Also with a Skype reading you may be put on the spot and need to respond, so you might be in the middle of a reading and you might draw a bit of a blank and you’re like: “Oh, I don’t know what this is.” You don’t have that luxury of just pushing that pause button or anything like that, so you do need to be ready with some strategies of what to do if you do kind of draw a blank and you’re not sure about what a card means, so just be ready for that.

One thing with Skype calls is that the technical issues can be so disruptive, like I love Skype so much, I think it is such an enabler but when there are tech issues, oh my goodness it’s the worst. So you might be in the middle of the reading and then you’re like: “Can you hear me, you’re frozen, you’re stuck.” And then everything sort of breaks down and your flow, your energy can really be interrupted in the reading. So, you might just have some standard requirements that you communicate to your client before the reading and that might be make sure you turn everything else off so you get a really strong internet connection, make sure you’ve go the latest version of Skype, and so on.

And actually, just coming back to scheduling calls, your client might just not show up, that’s the other sort of downside and that can be quite a time waster or maybe they show up 10 minutes late, 20 minutes late, can be quite frustrating. So, make sure that you set some clear expectations before the scheduled call to say, ok, anything up to five minutes, that’s fine, anything beyond five minutes then we need to reschedule the call or there might be a rescheduling fee. You might have a cancelation fee, so if they cancel within 24 hours of the committed time then maybe there’s no refund, something like that. You need to figure out where your boundaries are, but please make sure that’s clear with your clients. Be careful about running over time and if their turning up 20 minutes late, doesn’t mean you have to stay on for another 20 minutes. You might be quite clear that: “Well, this was an hour reading, so we are going to go through to the hour.” Even then if that means you’ve only got 40 minutes together. That’s up to the client, they should’ve showed up on time. And then finally you do need some equipment, a mic and a webcam.

Ok, so who is the Skype reading for? Typically, it’s for readers who are confident on video and confident being in front of the client. It’s great for readers who have a more coaching style of reading versus a more one-way. That’s said, like I consider myself more of a coaching style Tarot reader and I still get a lot out of email Tarot readings. And then finally really sort of practical element, this is for readers and clients who have reliable internet connections. So you know if maybe you’re in the Philippines it might not be the best way to connect to your clients, but if you’re in an area where you do have much better internet then absolutely this would be an option for you. And of course, I’m not just picking on the Philippines, I’m only thinking of that because when I was traveling there earlier this year, it’s like so intermittent, the connection there.

All right our last, last method for delivering a Tarot reading online is to do it via Social media. What do I mean? Well, you could do a public reading via Facebook Live or maybe YouTube and this could work in a couple of different ways. Maybe you offer a free reading to one, like to someone in your community and on the proviso that you can publicize that reading. It’s a good opportunity for potential clients to say: “Ok, well this is their style of reading, does that match him with what I’m looking for?” and so on. The alternative is that you could just do a generic reading, so for example I do the Tarot card for the week and I will publicize that via Social media. It’s a very different model, right? So, before this is very much one-on-one when were doing email, audio, video, Skype readings, but this is more of a sort of a reading that’s available to many people.

The advantages, potential clients can get a taste of your reading style and you can attract new potential clients by creating content from the readings. And what I mean by content is this could be part of your Social media strategy to do an example reading every week, so that you’ve got something there that people can refer to.

The downside is that the client that you’re working with must be willing to have their reading made public. You need to make sure that that is very, very clear and that you have their expressed permission to do so. And generally for public reading like that, you wouldn’t really charge for it so that can be a downside. I mentioned it before but I’ll do it again, using say YouTube for a one to one reading, I think you’ve got to be really mindful, it’s set up as a public forum and even though you can choose private, it can be a little bit, there are other ways of sharing readings more privately.

Who’s the Social media reading for? Well, readers who are really wanting to establish their business, might be you if your just early on in your online Tarot reading career. You might want to do a couple of those Facebook Live readings to build up your business. And of course it’s great for readers who are confident on video and if you’re not confident, just get on there, give it a go a couple of times and you will probably be confident by the end of it.

Listen as Brigit and her guests share their very best tips and strategies to help you read Tarot with confidence. And now, here is your host Brigit Esselmont.

Introduction

Brigit: Hello and welcome back to the Biddy Tarot podcast.  I am so excited to have you here.

If you jump onto Fiverr or Etsy, it seems like every man, or woman, and his dog will read your Tarot cards for five dollars.

Or walk down the streets of Manhattan and on every corner you’ll find a Psychic Tarot Reader with a bright neon sign out the front.

In fact, it’s becoming more and more difficult to truly stand out from the crowd as a reputable Tarot Reader that your clients can trust.

So how do you do it?

How do you stand out as a credible Tarot Reader?

How do you build and create that solid reputation?

In this podcast episode I’m going to walk you through the five ways that you can build your reputation as a Tarot Reader.

And, of course, I’ve created a special PDF just for you with these different five ways for building your reputation – and you can get those over at biddytarot.com/46  – download the free PDF, and also access the show notes.

So, let’s get into it with our very first way for you to really stand out as a reputable Tarot Reader, and that is to act like a professional.  So what do I really mean by this?

If we’re going to call ourselves professional Tarot Readers, then we need to be professional.  And that means being consistent.

When I say consistent, that’s like if you’re going to have a blog as part of your shop front, or a newsletter, then please, please don’t write that newsletter that says:  I’m so sorry I’ve been away.  I haven’t been doing this for long and I’ve been on holiday. I know I haven’t been talking to you for a while…

This just really gives a kind of negative perception of you as a business owner, and as a professional.

It’s really important – if you say you’re going to do a weekly newsletter, do a weekly newsletter.  If you say you’re going to do a weekly blog, then do a weekly blog.

All of this is sending a really strong message to your prospective clients about:

  • Can I trust this person?
  • And are they going to do what they said they were going to do?

Because if someone wants to have a Tarot reading with you, and yet you’re sort of in and out in terms of connecting with them with newsletters, or being on your blog or on social media, they’re just going to be like:  I’m not sure if this Reader really is legit, because she’s not turning up when she says she’s going to turn up.  And how do I know that she’s actually going to turn up for my Tarot reading?

So, really important, be consistent.

And talking about turning up, make sure you turn up on time, and deliver as promised.

If you’re going to say to your clients, “Yeah, I will do an instant Tarot reading, and you’ll get it in two hours,” – have a think about that, because I don’t know about you, but I sleep eight hours and there’s no way I would be waking up in the middle of the night to do a Tarot reading in two hours.

Or even making the promise of 48-hour delivery – that’s awesome if you can actually do it.  For me, I can’t because I have other commitments in my life and it’s just not possible for me to follow through on a 48-hour turn-around.

So think about what you’re promising to your Tarot reading clients, and make sure you stick to it. And if you say that you’re going to meet your client at 9am on Monday morning, make sure that you are there at 9am.

So a little bit more about how do you act as a professional: have a clear Code of Ethics.

If you think about professionals in other Industries, most of them will have that clear Code of Ethics and clear policies about how they operate. You expect a Doctor to prescribe to a certain Code of Ethics that’s part of a Medical Association.  A Lawyer certainly has a very clear Code of Ethics.

So as professional Tarot Readers we also need to have that clear Code of Ethics; and, again, Policies, and Terms and Conditions about:  What can you expect from you as a Reader?

And finally, treat your Tarot business like a business. Again, if you want to be professional, then be professional.

This is all about how you can build your reputation as a Tarot Reader. Take it seriously – it might be a fun hobby that’s for sure, but if you want to really build up your reputation, it’s so important that you really give it the attention it deserves and you do act like a professional.

So, Number 2:  Create a professional looking website or a shop front.

Maybe 10, 15 years ago you could have gotten away with a dodgy looking website, as long as it had the right content on it.  These days it is so easy to create a beautiful looking website just using a free theme and adding a little bit of content to it.

I don’t think that there are any excuses these days for having a dodgy looking site.

When you do have a more modern or professional looking website then, again, it sends a clear message to your clients that you care about your work, and that they can trust you.  They are sharing a lot of deep personal information with you, and so they want to know that you will treat them with respect and you are not just going to take their money and run and all those horrible things– because we know that’s not who you are, and we know that you want to do a great, great job.

So having something like a professional looking website or shop front can be really beneficial.

All you need to do if you want to have a nice website is select a clean, modern website theme, and I highly recommend using WordPress.

It’s also important to have your own domain or URL – and so what I mean by that is have like biddytarot.com…..obviously don’t have biddytarot.com, that one’s taken!  But, as an example, have biddytarot.com and not like biddytarot.wordpress.com

Very important you have your own domain.  They cost like 10 dollars a year from Go Daddy.  It’s a very minimal investment.

And, please, don’t set up your business on Facebook as the only place that you’re doing business.  Facebook can take away your account at any time, so imagine if you’d built up your whole business on Facebook and they took away your page and said you can’t access it anymore.

So please set up your own website if you want to be operating online, and have your own domain and URL.

Now, of course, if you’re not so much an on-line Reader but you love reading in your local community, then make sure you have a really nice shop front.

There’s a place down the road here, near where I live in Melbourne, and it’s a Beauty Therapist place. And they have their sign out the front, and it’s obviously where someone lives.  It’s part of a house, and it’s just sort of attached to the house. But in the front yard there’s a broken cubby-house; there’s broken glass out the front of this house; the fence is in disrepair. It just looks shabby. And I tell you what, I do not want to go to a Beauty Therapist that has things like broken glass out the front, because I am worried about: Are they actually caring for their clients? And if they’re giving me a facial, what are they using in that facial? And how do I know that I’m not going to end up with a rash, or something like that?

So it’s the same for us as Tarot Readers – we want to make sure that our shop front, or our website, looks really nice and professional, and conveys that trustworthiness.

So make sure you have a nice clean and tidy shop front; that you have clear signage, that signage wasn’t made by your 14-year old daughter, unless she’s like a super-star Graphic Designer.  That it just looks nice.

It’s also really easy to create a bit of a brand for yourself too.

Now, of course, you can go down one path, which is the path that I’ve taken, and invested in a huge amount of money and time in getting a brand, but you do not have to do that.

It’s easy to think about:

  • What do I want my main two colours to be?
  • And what font do I want to use?
  • And do I want to have a logo, or should I just use my name as the logo?

…and then just stick with that, and have that branding on your shop front or your website.

And really that’s all that you need.  You don’t have to go overboard with this.  You just want to make sure that when someone is thinking about engaging with you as a Tarot Reader, they have somewhere that really resonates with them, and has just a nice look and feel to it.

So that’s it:  Create a professional looking website or shop front.

So Number 3 for building reputation as a Tarot Reader:  Publish Testimonials and Case Studies from your best clients.

Now Step 1 to this is, go reach out to your clients that you’ve worked with already, and ask them if they could write you a testimonial.

Now many people – your clients – will probably write a gorgeous Testimonial to say:  It was amazing.  The reading was amazing.

That’s cool, that’s good – that’s kind of like Step 1.

But if you’re going to ask for a Testimonial, I suggest asking a couple of specific questions that they could respond to.  And that might be:

  • What was life like before you had a Tarot reading with me?
  • And then what was life like for you after the Tarot reading?

Your kind of digging around for a bit of story that says:  So maybe my Tarot reading was about a job that I didn’t really enjoy. So before the Tarot reading I felt really unclear about my job and if I could stay in it; and what are my other options?  And then after the Tarot reading, I felt immensely clear – I had a clear action plan. I had understood what the thing was that was underlying the issues to begin with.  And once I knew that thing, then I felt amazing and everything just started to move after that.

So just having those two simple questions for your clients:

  • What was life like before the reading?
  • And what was life like now after the reading?

And even:  What’s been possible for you since the Tarot reading with me?

That will give you much better testimonials and responses that you can use on your website or promotional materials.

If you want to take it even a little bit further than that, then you could try out doing a Case Study.

Now Case Studies are a little bit different to a Testimonials.  Testimonials are like that little writing that you have on your website, it’s in your nice little quotations, it says:  Jane says this….

It might have a photo as well – it’s really good if you can have a photo with that Testimonial.

But the Case Study takes it that little step further, and it tells a story about what happened for the client as a result of the Tarot reading.

So you might even, again with your client’s permission of course, create a video with your client and have your client talking on that video about how life changing that Tarot reading was.  Or if they’ve had many readings with you, how many things have changed as a result of being connected with you as a Reader.

You could get it done professionally, or you could just do it yourself. Make sure you’ve got a tripod and nice lighting, and all that kind of stuff, and then just edit it down into a short one-minute Case Study.

Then other people can come onto your website and see:  Oh, wow, this person actually had some really amazing outcomes as a result of the Tarot reading.

So that is way beyond, “Yeah it was really good – 5 stars!”

That’s great, but telling the story around what was different, or what changed, for your client is way, way better.

Of course if you’re ever going to be publishing Testimonials or Case Studies, make sure you have permission to publish from your client.  And you want to have that in writing.  And also I think it’s a good idea to say – to be clear about where these things will be published.  Particularly for Tarot, and people sharing information about themselves, there may be that concern:  I don’t really want you to share it on social media.  I don’t mind you sharing it here. Or I don’t want to you to share my full name –  just my first name; or photo or not photo; whatever it might be,

You just want to make sure that your client is 100 per cent comfortable with how you’re using their Testimonials. Very, very important.

Now, just a quick not about star ratings.  You can also have star ratings on, say, your Facebook Business Page, or in Yelp, or in other on-line review websites.  Star ratings are great because it’s sort of a quantifiable measure of your success as a Tarot Reader, or, more accurately, how people are perceiving your Tarot readings, but you do need to be prepared if you do get one-star ratings; or if someone has a secret vendetta against you and wants to put in these fake one-star ratings –  I hope that doesn’t happen to you – because that kind of negative feedback will also display.

So just be aware of that.

I think it’s nice just presenting Testimonials and Case Studies, because you do have a little bit more control over which stories you can share with your prospective clients.

Wonderful.

Okay, so Number 4 in terms of how do you build your reputation as a Tarot Reader:  Take part in an accredited training program, particularly for Tarot, or Counselling, or Life Coaching; whatever it might be.

It’s really important that you train with a teacher that you trust, and who really inspires you.

You want to find out, particularly with, say, a Tarot teacher:  Is the way that they read with the Tarot similar to the way that you read with the Tarot, or want to read with the Tarot?

And make sure that it aligns with your personal values and the way that you kind of see the world.

If you’re more of a coaching style of Reader and you start training with a teacher who is all about predicting the future, and timing, and things like that, you might feel some misalignment there and not a great connection.  But maybe that teacher’s a little bit more fluid and flexible, and more into the intuitive side of things, and that’s good fit.

If you’re selecting a teacher, then also think about:  Is this person well known and respected in the Tarot world?

The thing with the Internet these days – I think the Internet is such a good enabler, but what it has meant is that almost anyone can jump on-line and go, “Hey, I’m a Tarot teacher.  I’m going to teach you how to read Tarot.”

And, in fact, sometimes you can see those websites where it’s like:  Read Tarot – Make Money!!!

It’s kind of a little bit off-centre I think.  Of course you can make money reading Tarot, I fundamentally believe that, but it’s how you go about it; versus, “Do this and you’ll be making a thousand dollars a day in six weeks.” It’s crazy.

So just make sure that you’re training with a Tarot teacher who you respect, and who is known within the Tarot world as well.  And make sure that they are reputable – that you’ve heard good things about that person.

Just do a little bit of research.   Facebook’s great these days because you can always jump onto a Facebook forum and say:  Has anyone else trained with so-and-so? How did you experience it?  Was it good?

You also want to think about for, say, a Tarot training program:  has it been accredited by a third party?

So, again, it’s very easy to get a Tarot course up on-line, and start teaching Tarot, but it’s another thing to have a Tarot course that has been accredited by another reputable organization.

So, for example, with Biddy Tarot, all of our training programs have been accredited by the International Institute for Complementary Therapists.

Now we needed to submit a whole bunch of information from our Course Schedules, to how we make sure that our students are learning along the way, and it’s reviewed by the organization.  And not everyone gets accreditation who applies for it, but we did, so we’re very fortunate in that respect.

But it shows that the Biddy Tarot Training Programs are very solid and reputable.

So, as you’re thinking about, ‘How do you improve as a Tarot Reader?’ think about, ‘How do I find a training program that is accredited and run by reputable Tarot teachers?’ so that you can start to emulate a little bit of that success as well.

And just remember that there are a lot of free Tarot training programs on-line.  Some are really valuable, and some, well, they might give you some good insight into one particular area of Tarot, but they’re not necessarily going to give you an end-to-end experience.  So look for those Tarot training programs that are going to take you from:  Here’s your new deck of Tarot cards, to, wow, you are now reading for yourself and others, and feeling awesome about it.

Think about also:  Is there an opportunity to practice Tarot in a supported environment?

It’s one thing to learn how to read the cards, but getting the practice is incredibly important in terms of becoming a reputable Tarot Reader.  You need that experience so that you can get that Feedback and Testimonials, and so you can feel really confident, no matter what the situation.

And maybe is there an opportunity to be paired up with a Mentor or a Study Buddy?

Again, having that one-to-one contact with somebody as you’re learning to read Tarot can be incredibly helpful to really build up your skills.

So, for example, in the Biddy Tarot Community you can get access to our Free Tarot Readings Platform, which is where you practice free readings until your heart is content; and we have it set up so that you get feedback from your clients as well.

And we also have a Study Buddy inside the Community, so you can connect with any one of the 500 members inside the Community and really grow and develop your Tarot skills; plus, we’ve got a forum for the extra support.

So overall think about taking part in an accredited training program, where you do get that extra experience; you get one-to-one support; you know that you’re training with the Tarot Reader or teacher that you trust and respect; and, even better, if it’s been accredited by a third party organization to say, yes, this is a legitimate training program and it will achieve results.

And then finally to build your reputation as a Tarot Reader, consider becoming a certified Tarot Reader.

Typically to get certified as a Tarot Reader, you often go through a training program, and then through an application process or an exam or a test of some kind, and that ensures:  Does this person know what the Eight of Sword means?  And can they put together a Tarot reading?…and so on.

So, for example, with becoming a certified Biddy Tarot Reader you need to complete our two signature training programs which is Master the Tarot Card Meanings, and also Read Tarot with Confidence.

We have a series of quizzes for each of those programs to make sure you know your tracking learning the material – so you need to pass those quizzes.  And then at the end there’s like an exam – it’s not really because Tarot’s never an exam, it’s too fun – but, basically, you submit a number of different Tarot readings so that we can assess:

  • Does this person know what the cards mean?
  • Are they able to pull together a story?
  • Can they create a coherent and succinct message in the cards?
  • And can they create that engagement and connection with the client?

And that is actually assess by me personally, and then we have feedback given back to the person who’s applied.

And the thing, particularly with us, with a Certified Biddy Tarot Reader, is not everybody passes.

Of course we want everyone to pass, but if you don’t make the cut, I’m not going to certify somebody who I think is just not quite there yet, because it’s not right.  I want this to be a reputable program.  It’s not right to send someone out who hasn’t quite made the cut.

So that’s why I always provide personal feedback, and the opportunity to re-submit as well.  Just go back over the class materials, come back, re-submit, and hopefully the experience level has just gone up that little extra notch.

Now there is some debate about getting certified.  And if you posed a question in the Tarot community about getting certified, you always are going to get a bunch of people who go:  Ugh, certification… it’s absolute rubbish.  Who needs to be certified?

And even: Who’s got the power to certify someone?

Particularly with Tarot – it is quite subjective that’s for sure, and, as Tarot readers, we each have different styles and reading methods.  So it’s pretty hard to say, “Yes, you’re either 100 per cent right or 100 per cent wrong.”

There is definitely a gray area, but that’s something that I’ve found as I’ve certified Tarot Readers, I’ve always been respectful that we each have a different reading style.  And I do have clear criteria about what it is that I’m looking for in a reading, and then there’s a little bit of room around that to be who you are as a Tarot Reader.

I get it, I get why people think, ‘Who are you to certify somebody?’ and, ‘How are you going to certify someone?’ but these things can be easily addressed when setting up a good certification program.

So ultimately becoming a certified Tarot Reader, it is a personal choice, but it does give you a stronger reputation with your clients.  Imagine if you could have Certified Tarot Reader as something that you could share with potential clients.  I think that gives them a sense that: You know what? This person has invested in their training; they are taking their business seriously; they have a Code of Ethics in place, those kinds of things.  And that’s what can really, really build your reputation as a Tarot Reader.

Now in Episode 48, which is coming up soon, I’m going to go into a lot more detail about certification as a Tarot Reader, because there is a lot to think about in terms of certification, and if it’s the right fit for you.  But, for now, I want you to know it is a possibility, and it does help to build up your reputation.

It can be really personally satisfying and rewarding as well, and it sort of acknowledges again all of that commitment and investment that you’ve had with Tarot, and how much you’re going to invest in your clients as well.

So there you have it – those are the five ways to build your reputation as a Tarot Reader:

  1. Act like a professional
  2. Create a professional website or shop front
  3. Publish Testimonials and Case Studies from your best clients
  4. Take part in accredited Tarot training programs
  5. Become a certified Tarot Reader

I hope that’s been helpful for you.  Again it doesn’t really matter if you’re going yet full-time into your Tarot reading career, or if you’re just thinking about:  How can I be a reputable Tarot Reader even if I’m not reading for other people for payment just yet?

This is all really helpful advice to set you up to be that reputable, ethical, and competent Tarot Reader that I know you can be.

Wrap-Up

The 6 Signs That You’re Ready to Become a Professional Tarot Reader

FB-Blog-20161013-going-pro-the-6-signs-that-youre-ready-to-become-a-professional-tarot-readerYou’re fired up and you’re raring to go! You can’t wait to become a professional Tarot reader!

But how do you know if you’re truly ready? How can you be certain that you’re not going to go blank in a Tarot reading or disappoint your first paying client?

Here are 6 signs that you’re ready to become a professional Tarot reader. Plus I share my top tips and strategies for getting ready to ‘go pro’ with confidence and ease.

BLOG-20161013-Going-Pro-the-6-Signs-that-Youre-Ready-to-Become-a-Professional-Tarot-Reader1. You know all 78 Tarot card meanings without having to refer to a book

This isn’t about being able to memorise all 78 Tarot card meanings. This is about being able to look at any of the Tarot cards and connect intuitively with what it means for a particular situation.

So before you go pro, it’s essential that you learn how to interpret the cards, not just what the cards mean.

Instead of committing all 78 cards to memory, invest in learning the few techniques that will help you decipher any card in any reading.

(You’ll learn those exact techniques in my online Tarot training program, Master the Tarot Card Meanings.)

2. You know what Tarot spread to use

You don’t need to know every single Tarot spread that exists. However, you do need to know how to choose (and use) the right spread for the question asked.

My advice? Have a couple of standard spreads up your sleeve – the Celtic Cross, the Horseshoe Spread, and the Past/Present/Future spread.

But also learn how to create your own Tarot spread, specific to the situation or question. That’s where the magic happens!

For example, if a client asks you, “What is in my best interest – moving to a warmer part of the country, or staying local?”, you’re not going to get a specific answer from a Celtic Cross or a Past/Present/Future spread. But if you were to create a custom Tarot spread that evaluated the options and uncovered what to consider when making the decision, you could get some amazing insights.

So before you go pro, make sure you know how to get to the heart of the question, then break it down ‘mini questions’ to create a balanced, insightful and customised Tarot spread.

(This is exactly what I teach in my online program, Read Tarot with Confidence.)

3. You can tell a ‘story’ from the Tarot cards.

There’s nothing more boring than a Tarot reading where the reader just tells you what each card means and that’s that. You may as well get a free Tarot reading from a computer.

But, if you can create connections between the Tarot cards and tell a meaningful ‘story’ based on what you see, then you’re well on your way to becoming a professional Tarot reader.

That’s where the magic happens!

4. You rarely go ‘blank’ in a Tarot reading

Have you ever laid out the Tarot cards only to feel completely stumped as to what they mean?

No matter how hard you try, you can’t connect with the cards and you have no idea what to do next.

Here’s the thing…

Even the best Tarot readers have their ‘off’ days when they struggle to get a connection with their clients. However, the difference between an amateur Tarot reader and a professional Tarot reader is that a professional will know what to do when they go blank in a reading (and an amateur will freak out and start doubting their abilities).

You need to have a couple of different strategies for getting yourself out of those sticky situations when you go blank. Maybe you start describing the card as your intuition kicks into gear. Maybe you ask a few prompting questions to help get the conversation flowing. Or maybe you take a few deep breaths and bring yourself back to a state of calm and divine connection.

(In my program, Read Tarot with Confidence, I show you exactly what you need to do to avoid going blank in a reading – super helpful if you want to become a professional Tarot reader.)

5. You have experience reading Tarot for people you don’t know

Reading Tarot for your mum or your bestie is great, but what you really need to do before you ‘go pro’ is read Tarot for people you don’t know.

Why?

You’re not going to know anything about them which means you’re going to have to rely on your intuition and your Tarot cards to give the answer.

You’re going to encounter people from all walks of life with all kinds of issues, concerns and questions. Sure, some of the questions might be confronting or challenging (like, “Who’s the daddy of my baby?“). But this is exactly what you need to experience before you go pro, so you know where your boundaries lie and how you will respond.

And typically, they’re not going to be shy with their feedback. They’ll let you know when your Tarot reading sucks… and when your Tarot reading has completely changed their life for the better.

Do at least 50 readings for strangers to build your confidence and expand your experience.

Not sure how to find 50 people? We have 100s of people every day visiting Biddy Tarot in search of a free Tarot reading in exchange for feedback. Join the Biddy Tarot Community and you’ll get instant access as a Reader on the Free Tarot Readings platform so you can start practicing straight away. Plus, you’ll get access to training, resources and community support to help you truly grow as a confident, intuitive Tarot reader.

6. You’re a trained and certified Tarot reader

One of the best ways to know you’re ready to go pro is to become a trained and certified Tarot reader with an accredited organisation.

Sure you don’t have to get training and certification to be a professional Tarot reader, but it can be very advantageous for you if you do.

You’ll hone your Tarot reading skills and equip yourself with tried and tested techniques for connecting with your Tarot reading clients.

You’ll give your confidence a boost, knowing that you have everything you need to become a professional Tarot reader and you’ve got the backing of a reputable organisation.

And you’ll stand out from the crowd and get more clients because you have the certification that shows you’ve dedicated yourself to reading Tarot in an ethical and professional way. Clients will trust you and know they’re not just getting some dodgy person off the street who’ll read their cards for $5.
